Geeky questions (probably only answerable by a bloke...)

Now that got your attention didn't it?!

As I said elsewhere, I'm having a crappy day today and have a couple more problems/annoyances;

I have a lightscribe DVD burner but how the Hell do I used the lightscribing? If anyone does this to their discs, what burning software do you use?

I have a couple of movie files that I downloaded via BearShare and now I can't get rid of the buggers. They won't delete and keep saying they're in use by another program, even from a freshly started system. I didn't think viruses could be carried in avi files but I could be wrong. Is there any way I can find out what's using these files so I can shut it down via Task Manager and then remove them?

Thanks - and you ladies can answer too...!

Robert

Robert - as you correctly said - this is one for the blokes -

After "crappy day" it all went over my head :lol:

Um if you know the names of these files it might be worth going into your registry and searching for the files in there, if they come up delete straight from there and this will get rid of them. Be careful though, if they are viruses they might have renamed themselves into something else which means your gonna have fun finding them

Claudia, I gave up before "Crappy day". I haven't got a clue what Robert is on about!

Robert, try using Nod32 antivirus. If anything will shift bugs/viruses that will.

Come on Claudia, after your Blackberry situation a few months ago, I know you must now be a bona fide techo-wizard!

Please tell me how to do lightscribing! You can make pictures on CD's and DVD's - I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!

    What is lightscribing?

Instead of using a permanant marker or self-adhesive labels to identify your discs, lightscribing is the ability to burn images or text onto the top face of the plastic. It looks very cool but I can't find how to use it in the Roxio software program that came with my burner.

    So now you know!

I'm currently running my virus scanner - apparently I last scanned in late August so I guess I turned it off as it kept slowing my system down!). Oh dear!

How do I edit the registry? Type 'regedit' into the Run bar?

Yep type that in and then it will come up with the registry then click on edit and find. Hopefully that will work for you, fingers crossed :)

Just did that and it didn't work. Isn't the registry more for modifying settings rather than deleting actual files? The virus scan returned nothing neither.

I really need to check if my computer is being hacked from afar and why I can't delete these files. I remember under the older versions of Windows there was a utility to check for hackers or summat but I can't find it under XP. :x

My pc was swamped by loads of viruses(erm viri?) by my son downloading from Bear Share. The pc doctor told me NEVER EVER to use Bear Share as it is just an open door for all kinds of nasty stuff. Anyway, I had a gentle counselling session with the lad and he now borrows my Mantovani and The Music of the Mountains CD, and sometimes I let him listen to Big Tom and the Mainliners, (Country and Western not acid rock)

Would you be awfully offended if I felt sorry for him, LOL!

Yeah, I know the dangers of file sharing but it's usually not a problem since I'm quite careful what I download. I finally managed to delete one of the strange files by very randomly turning off 'hide known file extensions' and then renaming it to 111. I was then able to delete it from both my computer and the recycle bin. The other's still sitting in the recycle bin though and I can neither delete or restore that swine!

BearShare - isn't that the one you sent me to copy on to a DVD?

    :?

No, that was a nifty little freeware program called 'Burn4free' which did exactly what it said on the tin...

BearShare is a file sharing program used for downloading errrr..... maybe not quite so legitimate software and movies! S*****man 3 didn't bloody work though, I can tell you!

Ahh. I think it has a Bear logo - or is it because they both begin with a B?

I am a girlie and get confused easily...

I have to say if you're using p2p without a virus checker running you're asking for trouble. That said, I've downloaded lots of stuff via emule and only had four infected files in over a year.

Doesn't sound like a virus to me somehow though - maybe this will help http://www.computersinmotion.com/?act=home

I do have a virus scanner running permanently, I'd just turned off the scheduled scanning.

Earlier tonight though, a Windows utility called DEP (Data Execution Prevention) kicked in - something I've never even heard of before. It lives in Control Panel - System - Advanced - Performance - Settings - DEP. It's only activated if something untowards is detected so I know there's something still dodgy on my lappy. The funny file in my recycle bin is still unmovable/undeleteable so I'd have a stab at that as the root cause.

It's 8.23am, I have been awake since 5am when my son decided it might be a good idea to wake up and beat the cr*p out of his cot mobile and I have heartburn coming on....... I thought I'd log in here and see if anything interesting had been posted....... I am now very confused and getting a headache. I am going to avoid my PC for the rest of the day now as it's obviously a scary place inside it! What with Bears and stuff lurking about.

Robert o Robert why not just get the Care Bears DVD Box Set as we know that's what you have down loaded.

Seriously though do what I do - go narrowband so it takes too long to load anything at all, wait until the film goes to DVD and either goes to the bargain bin in your local up to £1 shop or alternatively wait for the library to get it, borrow it for one night watch it, and then take it back. simply cheap and effective and no damage to the Edit Registry (whatever that is) on your PC.

Re:Geeky questions (probably only answerable by a bloke...)

Rob, if you haven't sorted this by now - a lot of avi's (I download a lot for LOST series) carry viruses and system crash nasties... the main aim isn't to delete or make your HD give up, it's just to use all the system resources. Then most poeple do the net thihng and run an online free scan which brings up all sorts of sheet which isn't even there just so you purchase or download a copy of the "Magic Freeware" to rid your infections only for the "Magic software" to actually remove all data on your HDD.

Hopefully you didn't mess with your registry, it's a damn tricky area and if you don't know what you;re looking for then I'd advise against editing anything.

There IS however a handy tool downloadable from the net found here (will d/l automatically cos im friendly like that)

    http://www.soft32.com/Download/free-trial/Delete_FXP_Files/4-75880-1.html

Install that and run it, a tree menu of your folders will appear, just search through the folders to get to the file/s you want to remove and once you get to them if I remember rightly, you just right click on it and say remove.

If that doesn't work, it should do, but if it don't let me know.
