I received this through e-mail yesterday and was waiting for the punchline... but it didn't come! It's a serious thread! I'm so damn angry!

The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the 2012
London Olympics because they are deemed "too British".

Organisers of the event say that the Arrows military background might be

"offensive" to other countries taking part in the Games. The display team

Have performed at more than 4000 events worldwide, but the Department of

Culture, Media and Sport have deemed the display team "too militaristically

British". Red Arrows pilots were said to be "outraged", as they had hoped

To put on a truly world class display for the Games, something which had never

Been seen before. Being axed from a British-based event for being "too

British" is an insult - the Arrows are a symbol of Britain.

The Red Arrows have been excellent ambassadors for British overseas trade,

As they display their British-built Hawk aircraft all over the world.

The Arrows performed a short flypast in 2005 when the winning bid was

Announced, but their flypast at the Games was to have been truly

Spectacular.

It is to be hoped that common sense prevails

How about dropping a couple of bouncing bombs on the auld enemy within number 10 Downing Street? Now that would be fantastically English, sorry I mean British!

There's only two things that concern me about this story.

    1. It isn't true and
    2. It isn't true

That the story appeared in The Sun should have been a major clue to it being a work of tendentious fiction - the usual Sun lies in other words.

Just goes to show there are plenty of idiots who believe all they read and will sign anything.

People are often guilty of being gullible - especially if they don't fully research the true facts first - but I think it's a little harsh to blanketly call them idiots simply because they were duped, Chris!

I can't believe that I'm being taken to task by Robert for being curmudgeonly - a case of pots and kettles?

The really sad thing is that in a week or so The Sun will be running stories about how their campaign forced the Government to back down over this.

I'm not taking you to task Chris and it's nothing personal, just that I hate that extremely tired old cliche that all Sun readers are idiots and how it's oft used by people who should really know better.

Believe it or not - and many probably won't! - but I'm actually quite a tolerant person in real life and detest '-isms' and blanket assumptions!

    Regards,

    Robert

No, honestly I am Paul, I haven't had a good 'tear-up' on here for a few weeks now! That might change here though...

... the only thing that's annoyed me today is Lewis Hamilton turning his back on Britain now that he's got a few quid in the bank. Not only did he in my opinion "co-conspire" with McLaren to rob the British public of a long overdue F1 hero but now he's bemoaning that he can't lead a normal life anymore. I don't hear him bemoaning the fact that he doesn't earn a normal wage either though...

Hero to asshole in one week... Gggggggrrrrrrrrr!!!

I wonder if Hamilton is aware that the Swiss people have just elected as their government a party who feel this way about black people?

I guess wealth buys a fair bit of protection from racism though.

Louis Hamilton? Why is everyone interested? Another priveledged lad getting paid for doing something he loves. Dont understand the appeal. You had the money and the support to learn how to drive cars fast, well done young man!

Good to see there's a fence in your picture Chris, since the Swiss have sat on it for the last two World Wars...

I could be there with you Paul. I've loved F1 for years but whatever happened at the end of the F1 championship this season stinks to high heaven and is anything but for the normal fans. F1 - like premiership football - now only seems to exist and serve itself. I'm convinced that Mclaren blew the championship and secretly paid off Hamilton hence his lack of fuss. If it was genuine and I was him, I'd have shotgunned the whole bloody lot of 'em. His attitude just seems to be "Oh well, never mind, next season etc..." In the words of Catherine Tate's Nan, "What a load of old s**t!"

Paul - you've made me angry from being calm. Well done, mate!

I have to say that in Lewis's case, his Dad worked 2 jobs to get him in to karting and he has been pretty dedicated all along.

Yes he's lucky he's getting paid for doing something that he enjoys but then so am I! Unfortunately not the same amount as him!!

There must have been money coming in from somewhere, any normal working class family wouldnt be able to support a child who wanted to dedicate his life to racing carts. Motor sport is a very expensive business. I know he would have sponsorship, but not to start with.

There was a documentary on TV a couple of weeks ago.

Because he was such a success at an early age, his father did two jobs and he had sponsorship from about 12 years on.

Apparently he was featured regularly on Blue Peter and that attracted media and sponsorship even at that age.

I think he was just very lucky that his father was prepared to support him and see that it could develop into something incredible.

Like being so hounded by people that he had to run off to Switzerland. Apparently his move was motivated by a previously unpublicised love of cuckoo clocks and Toblerone and not by greed at all. Nope.

I'd love to have that to worry about.

On a similar note, I feel very sorry for Steven Gerrard. I was disgusted to read yesterday that he has HAD to play 6 games of football in the last 18 days.

There's a story going round here that a local footballer dropped his payslip and it was £80k+ after stoppages!

Poor things - how on earth do they manage?

Yeah, but fair's fair to Steven Gerrard. He does do his bit for our emergency services by being convicted of careless driving in 2005 and then running a little kid over just a couple of weeks ago and sending him to hospital...
