Quickbooks and VT

Hi everyone,
My client wants to change his software from Sage to Quickbooks.
As I have never used Quickbooks, I was wondering if he can get away with the Simple Start version rather than the Pro?
It's a small retail business with 2 shops so there are no debtors effectively.
He is registered for VAT.
My main concerns are the difference's in the two versions, i.e COA and reports.

Blobbyh, I know you have experience in Quickbooks and that it comes recommended. Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a fan of VT, so if anyone out there can compare Quickbooks and VT that would be an added bonus! :D:D

Thanks all
Sharon

    Hi
Simple Start is very very basic and probably won't be sufficient to record the transactions of 2 shops. For a start I think that there's a limit on the number of suppliers you can set up.
Having said that, I think that you can buy simplestart (download if from the website?) and try it out, and then just pay the difference in price to upgrade to pro if/when he wants to. That way if he finds that simplestart is sufficient he'll have saved some money.

I've only used the Pro 2004 & 2006 versions of QuickBooks Sharon so I really can't speak about smaller cut down versions. Personally, I know £2-300 might be a great deal of cash for someone to invest in a piece of software, but I'd hate to recommend a cheaper version only for someone to later find out it's not up to scratch and have to upgrade anyway.

EDIT; Just did an Amazon search and found the regular 2006 version for £110. Ignore the reviewer who claims this won't run on Vista - he's partly right since it won't run as a standard intall - so you have to use the compatability mode within Windows to fool Vista into thinking it's XP!

    From the Intuit website for QuickBooks Regular 2006;

You could even try some of the Powersellers on E-Bay to see if you can find it cheaper still.

    Thanks Guys :)
At least I can rule out the Simple Start version.

I forgot to mention that the business is a partnership so I would be looking for this option in COA, also what about journals. I've noticed that the 2006 regular version doesn't have this facility.

Wouldn't know about the partnership aspect but doesn't this version have a customisable chart of accounts anyway for you to configure?

Also, surely it must have journals since they're such an integral part of accounting - I thought I read somewhere it just lacked the expanded journal options available in higher versions?

    Robert

EDIT; here's a quick comparsion of the 2008 versions of QB though it doesn't include the superseded 2006 Regular one!

    Hi Robert,
I found this comparison which is why I mentioned about the journals with reference to the regular version but the Pro looks ok with all the other features that are relevant.

Thanks for the links, very useful :D

Well according to that comparison table I shouldn't be able to do journals either since they're limited to the QuickBooks Permier version and I'm only running Pro! So maybe you shouldn't have too much faith in its accuracy. Maybe I'm wrong but I'd have thought even the most basic accounting software programs would still be able to do journals seeing as they're pretty core stuff?! Never mind!

I know it's a QuickBooks site but it does feel a bit too much over biased towards QuickBooks compared to Sage.
