Statutory Holiday Entitlement

I have just received my copy of the November issue of Accounting Technician.
To my dismay I find that not only my clients but some of my peers do not understand the new rules for the statutory holiday entitlement.
These rules were drafted specifically to help part time workers a point AT seems to have missed.
The entitlement is specifically 4.8 weeks not 24 days, this only applies if the eyee works a five day week.

Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
Are you being serious?
First of all, and in defence of your clients', do you really expect them to digest this information and fully understand it? Surely if they did you would be out of a job!
Secondly, you feel that strongly about it that you post it in two forums and you're intent on knocking your 'peers' and the 'AAT'. Are you expecting a welcome reply?
Thirdly, your post is a statement with no actually justification to what you are saying. Just putting 'its 4.8 weeks and not 24 days' is like saying you say tomato, I say tomatoe.
Perhaps a better way of putting things is to air your views without be derogatory!
However, technically I agree with you, the extremely small article in the magazine isn't 100% 'technically' accurate. Although to be fair on the editor it is under 'News in brief'.
I think maybe you should have put an explanation to your statement and for those that have read this thread and thought 'isn't the opening thread the same thing', the distinction between the two is:
For employees, the statutory holiday entitlement has changed Γ’β¬β from 1 October 2007, the entitlement increased from four weeks to 4.8 weeks (24 days if you work a five-day week).
"What does 4.8 weeks mean?"
The regulations express the holiday entitlement as weeks i.e. 4.8 weeks is 4.8 times your usual working week. If you work a five day week, then 4.8 weeks is 24 working days; if you work 4 days a week, then 4.8 weeks is 19.2 working days, and so on.

Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
Firstly I wasn't being derogatory.
I know my clients do not understand the rules I have had to explain them to them.
I was not knocking the AAT I was trying to point out that rules reqiring to be implemented from the 01 October deserved better clarification than a small article in the News in brief section of the November issue of AT.
I posted in two forums as I was unsure as to the category of my post.
No! I did not expect or require a welcome reply I merely wanted to point out to fellow MIP's and Employers that the article was inaccurate.
I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused to yourself.0 -
Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
Dean,
I think thats a bit harsh under the circumstances as I have to admit I too was a bit irritated, though it is a very small item in the magazine.
In order to correct the situation I have e-mailed my contact at Ten Alps publishing (did you know that Bob Geldof owns it?) and asked her to publish a clarification.
My job takes me around the country training and lecturing on this subject and I can confirm that there are a lot of people who think they are entitled to what was 20 days holiday irrespective of the pattern of their working week and employers get caught up in it as well.
Another inaccuracy in the item was that it claims all public holidays are include when only half of the combined bank and public holidays are included now, with the rest following in 2009.
Whilst this post perhaps could have been worded a bit better I do think we have a right to expect an accurate reflection of new legislation in our magazine, dont you?

Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
Hi
Without wanting to go off on a tangent to much, this clarifies an opinion IΓ’β¬β’ve had of "Accounting Technician" for a while now.
The biggest articles in AT are always more an issue of general reading rather than that of CPD and relevant news. CPD and technical issues just tend to be a straightforward column that doesnΓ’β¬β’t really explain much and the biggest space is usually given to an article about a particular member.

Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
Just following on from Neil's comments - lately a lot of the more technical articles are published on the online magazine. One or two of my articles and other contributors technical articles have appeared on the online magazine as opposed to the print magazine.
I agree that the majority of the articles published in the print magazine do generally focus on the CPD aspect of AAT and members profiles which (in my opinion) is not really something particularly relevant to most people - we all know AAT members have to do CPD from 1/1/08 but profiling members every month and ranting about isn't (in my opinion) warranted. Indeed, the holiday entitlement and other statutory changes in law should feature more predominantly than the repetitive CPD policy (which is getting very boring).
Best wishes

Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
Hi
Follwoing on from Steve, the "lets look at a member profile" topic appears in nearly all issues and take up about 3 pages. The latest ones are regarding CPD but quite often they seem to be of the "look what the AAT qual did for J Bloggs" nature, I'm assuming this is meant as some form of promotion for the AAT. If were already students or members, do we need to read such information? There was an issue a while back (possibly more than a year) and the AAT wasn't even mentioned in the persons career!

Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
So we're all agreed that the magazine is rubbish!
Member profiles should take up no more than a 1/3rd page column. It is sometimes interesting to see what other members have done with their careers in order to give people new ideas or see what other options they have to use their qualifications. But three pages!! Accountants lives just aren't that interesting to warrant so much detail!
And why is it that every member profiled puts their achievements solely down to CPD and the joy CPD brings to their lives!
I think, if anything, Council members should be profiled (again, keeping it short) or perhaps details provided as to what all the various committees and sub-committees have been up to.
Technical articles are pretty poor in comparison to other magazines too. In fact, as far as I can see there is only one technical article in this months issue on stamp duty. The first sentence reads:
"You may be surprised to learn that until the introduction of Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT), no one was liable to pay stamp duty."
Er.. ok.0 -

I hope my articles don't fall within your version of "poor".
Though it wouldn't really matter because I won't be submitting any articles in the near future due to work commitments and further studying.0 -

Do I take that as a compliment? :shock:0 -
Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
i think you are wrong to say steve articles are poor.i am only a student doing my last paper but i think the articles go into more detail than the others in the magazine and they are easier to understand.our tutor used one of steve article in our audit skill tests.

Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
As a student member, I get very tired of seeing so much of the magazine either devoted to some quite uninteresting people (though I'm sure they're very nice!) or used for self-promoting the AAT. I quickly flick through most of the mag, only stopping to read something that looks particularly interesting or an article written by someone I might know - e.g. Steve or CJC - and the student zone. Spare a thought for us mere students; I imagine we contribute a large percentage of the AAT income but are only given five or six pages per month while the rest seems just for you senior AAT-ers and above!

Robert

Dipak,
I think (or at least I hope) Dean's comments about my articles were said "tongue in cheek". I am glad you have found them useful. I didn't realise tutors accessed them!
Kind regards

Did I really say that?! :?
Steve's articles are like his forum postings.. well-written, informative, relevant and sometimes even interesting!
Robert, not sure I agree with your point..
You get a whole section dedicated to you, you get to hear about the joys of becoming a member when you do pass, you get to hear about all the wonderful career choices your new qualification will afford you.. I would say you get your money's worth!
Us senior (?!) AAT-ers get one technical article and a few book reviews worth of reading!

Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
Dean says some of them are interesting!! :-o
I personally would say that I'm helping those members who sometimes struggle to get to sleep. Read one of my auditing articles and if they don't send you off into the land of nod nothing will!!!!
Dean, your summary of the AAT magazine is spot on! Well said!!!
Let's not forget though how much a life-changing event CPD is and how they remind us of this in every single issue!0 -
Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
Steve, as you know I've been having a few sleepless nights lately so is there any chance you could submit an article such as 'An Idiots Guide to IR35' to help me nod off?! Both educational and a cure for my insomnia at the same time!peugeot wrote:I personally would say that I'm helping those members who sometimes struggle to get to sleep. Re:Statutory Holiday Entitlement
To be honest with you Robert I try to avoid IR35 like the plague.
Thankfully I do not have any clients that fall within the realms of IR 35, however, from my discussions with fellow accountants it can appear that even HMRC have difficulty in applying the regulations governing IR35 (why does that not surprise me? )
