PTC and pension contributions

In the dec 06 qu can someone explain why the occupational contribution to pension isn't deducted from the salary in the tax return but in the tax computation it is? I would have thought that the net fig used in the tax comp would be the fig you put on the tax return if this fig is meant to be after deducting the occupational pension?

    I've read the question on the June 2006 paper and it says the pension isn't occupational, he pays into a private pension scheme.

    Sorry I'm getting confused it's the june 07 paper. WOuld you be able to have a look at this paper for me. I have spent so long looking at it and just can't understand why they have done it the way they have.
