Im joining the gym at work, as we have a special offer on.

What are the best trainers for general gym use?
Not for track running or street use, but for use on the equipment etc

Im not a trainers person, so dont currently have any, just lots of sk8 shoes

I'm no expert this is something I had to go into a bit earlier this year coming from much the same position as you.. There's some brief advice here http://www.sportsshoes.com/advice/cross-trainers-or-running-shoes- which I found useful.

To some extent it depends on what you'll be doing in the gym but for the usual things you won't need to fork out for the support and all the whistles and bells that you'd want for serious running. I ended going for a running shoe towards the mid/lower end of the price range - though I still think that for everything but the treadmill I could have managed with my everyday Chuck Taylor's.

How come you are using the Essex County emblem as your atavar, Chris?

Ahem, Middlesex CCC I think you'll find - very similar to Essex's emblem though. A legacy from student days spent at Lord's and indeed Uxbridge.

Ok, but they are sea swords. Isn't Middlesex landlocked?
