Hello,

I'm new to this site and was wondering if anyone can please help me?

I have been working for 1 1/2 years in payroll, I currently do 13 payrolls per month for our clients - so I know how to process the payroll using Sage 50.

However I now have the chance to do a qualification in this area.

I have spent a lot of time printing information off from various colleges etc, but not sure what to go for or where to go.

I'm in the Southampton area.
I have come across IPP practitioner certificate in payroll administration as well as Diploma in payroll management & AAT NVQ in payroll level 3.

Firstly I’ve noticed that most of these are home based and I’m worried that I’m not the sort of person that can sit at home and learn from reading a book, and would prefer to learn in a class?

Does anyone know of any courses near Southampton that are class based, and can anyone give any advice on which to go for?

Thank you :001_smile:

Hi kate, if your doing 13 payrolls a month there is nothing on the AAT DNP that you wouldnt know and you would eat it up and frankly you would be bored with it so do that at home. cant comment on the CYE level for year end things as I havent done it yet.

I have just taken exams in Jun08 for DNP. I was also struggling to find any college nearby who would teach Payroll. So I had to do Homestudy. BPP's Homestudy is very good.IF you are working in Payroll Department, most syllabus in DNP will be relevent to work. You need to send work based evidence for 3 skills test, Unit 71,72 and 73.If you can work out the relevance
to your work, it is only one exam paper i.e DNP and if you are doing Yr. End returns, then CYE should also be relevant.

For me it was hard to work out what work based evidence was relevant, because I work in industry and we have very small payroll.
    Good Luck.

    Kate,

I am afraid your asumption is right, most of the qualifications are home study (IPP, Payroll Alliance, HRD & Payroll Solutions and IAB). The AAT one can be either but, and I think you have worked this one out, it all depends on your preferred method of study.

All qualifications take some form of discipline and many people need the classroom atmosphere in order to do their best.

HRD & payroll solutions (www.hrdps.co.uk) does an internet based option with a virtual college. IPP have their foundation qualification which is similar to the AAT's Level 2, and as Warwick points out you may find this too much like your day to day work. Be careful though because the qualifications take you into areas that are not dealt with on a day to day basis so you may still find the level 2 a struggle.

I am sure one of the Southampton colleges does the AAT qualification though I cannot remember which one.

Best thing to do is go to the standards, either from the AAT website or directly to www.ukstandards.co.uk and see what you are expected to learn. Next have a good think about home study, just what is it that you feel will cause you a problem and see if you can deal with that. Home study does provide you with more options if you can find a way of doing it.
