Pre-trading expenditure

Hi i am unsure of the rules surrounding pre trading expenditure. I have a sole trader who is planning to set up his own business. what pre-trading expenditure can he claim and how long i the period of pre trading expenditure last

This is my first client so would really appreciate some help!
