Quick Question

I have never done Payroll - ever. Would I need to be in a Payroll job to get me through Level 2? Thinking about starting in September, currently doing Level 3 Accounting and fancied trying Payroll.
Has the payroll qualification changed like the accounts one - to QCF?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Cant find anywhere near me that does AAT Payroll, all do IAB?
Havent got a clue what the difference is or why no one teaches it.
My local college only teaches AAT Payroll to school leavers as part of a full time course, which is no use to me! bobbins. Seems I will have to use IAB!0 -
Yep! thats the same here, i don't know what IAB is too? they all seem to do that and AAT NVQ 3 and not 2

Ive googled IAB - apparently it stands for The International Association of Bookkeepers, founded in 1973 and is recognised in 60 countries. Think I am going to go and enrol for Level 2 next week, havent got much to loose.0

ok..
I may register too.. how much are you paying or is it free?0 -
Spoke with my local college today about level 2 - was told £250 including exam - it is government funded - so if your in receipt of any benefits it will be £50 including exam. That is for 15 wks manual payroll - then you do an external exam, then I think if you pass you can do the computerised payroll which is another 15 weeks - but then you have to pay for that seperate - so another £250 or £50 depending on your circumstances - and I suppose it depends on if your college is offering government funding.0

where about is that? i cant ffind anywher near me that does it, 1 college does IAB but it would take me 1 hour 30mins to get ther plus 3 changes0

Have you checked the details with your local college, my local college have combined the Level 2 and 3 together and are just refering to it as 'level 3' This could be the case with your college as well. I have only comleted the Level 2 as I had my babies and never got round to level 3!
I have been doing payroll for 10 years now and I think you will be fine doing the qualification without having ever done the job. If you can get a job in payroll, all the better. I would definately reccommend the AAT payroll course though, it makes sense of a lot of things and will certainly help you grasp the basics of payroll.

Hi everyone,
I have been involved in payroll tutoring and would say catagorically that there is no requirement to be working in payroll to be able to study, in fact the NVQ and QCF rules are that the courses must be constructed in such a way that it allows you to study and be successful without being in relevant employment.
Saying that, though, it is fairly obvious that if you are working in payroll the studies will be easier to grasp as the subject will be more relevant. I emphasise the word "easier" and not easy, because its not easy for anyone and isnt meant to be.
There is also the issue of working for someone who wont do payroll correctly and there are plenty of them around. Studying under those circumstances can be equally difficult.
I would also recommend AAT as it is genuinely NVQ based and the standards are publically available so you can find out yourself what you are supposed to achieve, just go to www.ukstandards.co.uk and search for "payroll". You cant do that with either IAB or the Institute of Payroll Professionals, or Payroll Alliance or Learn, all of whom do payroll qualifications.
