Hi Guys
I am interested in the above subject any idea where to enrol a course or provider. I've finished my AAT and cleared and would like to pursue in ACCA but can't afford to fund my studies any further so I'm thinking of taking the payroll unit instead.
Please can you advice which provider are good in distance learning course.
Many thanks in advance...

Lyn,
Best starting point is the AAT website which will list the centres approved to deliver the payroll units. You will have to contact the ones closest to you quickly as many will not be in a position to deliver it because of insufficient interest.
You could consider distance learning or go to BPP, they often will deliver, even if the class size is technically too small.
Dare I say it, if you cannot find something suitable you could consider studying with IAB or the IPP.

Premier Training do Level 2 and 3 payroll with or with out sage, but its home study.0

Does anyone know if the Payroll exams are on the new computer system or are they still paper?0
-
Just looking at the BPP Website - and they are no longer offering the AAT Level 2 payroll course, does anyone know if this has been scrapped? is it worth persuing?0
-
Premier Training are offering AAT payroll level 2 & 3, I know we are not doing it as an option at college, which is a pity as I thought of doing that myself, may have to wait to I finish AAt and study seperate0

yes i have spoken with premier but she said they are phasing out the payroll qual - but did not say when - dont want to get half way through a qual and not be able to finish. They said that this qual is all paper based - and 2 sims - havent got a clue how you would do a simulation - who would supervise it? I am not working atm so couldnt get a supervisor to supervise it.0

The AAT has not made a final decision about payroll but I know the accounting exams are all going to be, largely, computer based assessment under the new QCF style which replaced the old NVQ's. As far as I am aware the tax assessments will move over and I am hoping a final decision on payroll will come in the new year.
There are public examinations in December 2010, June and December 2011 but, as you have found out, some centres are no longer going to do it probably because they are sceptical that learners can complete the course quickly enough.
As far as simulations are concerned the AAT will find someone to supervise it because you cannot be left without these complete otherwise you can't finish the qualification.
Speak to Rose Howley at the IPP, 0121 712 1000, or her staff or get in touch with IAB as see what they can do to assist.

Yes, I just registered today too to ask a similar question about payroll qual. I have no previous accounting experience but have always wanted to work in payroll/accounting (obvious, start by taking what I can). I currently have worked in customer service for 5 years and due to forced redundancy want to change my career in a direction I have a passion for. I aim to get a basic payroll assistant job on very low wage but even these are looking for payroll experience, which I of course don't have.
I was interesting in the AAT Payrol L2 then L3, to even get my foot in the door at a low wage payroll job, then study AAT Accounting all the way to the top so I can advance my career in a way I feel I am capable of!
I am saddened to see the Payrol qual does not seem to be going forward from next year, the BPP peeps are not offering it, and only place I found that were was Premier Training but the previous posters confirmed they agreed this is being phased out.
I could go straight for the AAT Accounting which I realise is very indepth too, but this wouldn't give me the very basic payroll experience I was after to get my foot in the door.
Does anyone have any ideas where I should start so I can get a basic payroll job, will the AAT Accounting help, or will potential employers just think it isn't directly relevant.
I even considered just buying the AAT Payroll textbooks from BPP and self-learning just for my own experience, not for a qualification, like I said, I intend to start at the bottom and work my way up! lol
I would appreciate any advice, esp from "payrollpro" as (s)he seems to know what (s)he's talking about! (I've read a few posts last night :-P)
Edit: PS thanks for reading, cause I know this is so long and boring.0 -
Hello Ezrolith (m or f?)
Not long and boring, I know there are many people like you who need to know what is going on and I can say that AAT have finally made a formal announcement that is is ending its payroll qualifications for now.
The reason why employers are looking for experience even at basic practitioner level is the scope for error and the penalties for making such errors, employers simply cannot afford mistakes and bureaux have the same issue. A simple case in point, we have just taken over the payroll for a new client and the previous provider was applying the tax point at the end of the pay week instead of the proper method of using the date of payment to determine the tax week. Simple error, a lot of work to correct and potentially very costly for the client (failure to apply the PAYE regulations).
If the old provider had been qualified, this would not have happened.
Contact the IAB (www.iab.org.uk) who have QCF qualifications from L1 to L3 (I have the specifications here if you want to discuss it), or alternatively go to www.payrollprofession.org who do payroll/pensions/benefits in kind etc from L4 (foundation) right up to masters degree. The IPP's collection is good, but then I would say that, I wrote a lot of it and I am working with them now on L4 apprenticeships in payroll.
If you have any queries or concerns or want some names give me a call on 07903 834733 or e-mail me at ian@thelimepartnership.co.uk

I must admit am quite shocked the AAT have pulled the payroll qualifaction as to me this is one of the fundermentals of any accountant techinition to learn and know payroll.
Personally ive been quite lucky as i use a really good payroll package and have received fantastic training on the job so havnt needed to do the qualifaction, however with the changegs proposed i feel it is essential that a better understanding will be needed. Wouldnt it be better that a payroll element be included therefore in the AAT technition qualifaction?0 -
You will know by now that AAT has officially announced its intentions.
I can see the point about including a payroll module in the accounting units, however, that is what it used to be (in the olden days when I did my ATFA!!) and such an approach, in my view, will not be appropriate at all. A module within another qualification is just not sufficient to develop competency in such a critical business function.
Where the AAT has a problem is in funding the modernisation of the accounting qualification and it is interesting to note that whilst AAT wants to be in th 21st century and at the cutting edge of learning and assessment technology, none of the other bodies are doing so, because they can see the enormous cost involved.
The AAT is likely to work closely with other professional bodies such as IAB and IPP in order to ensure there is a valid qualification in place. As I mentioned above, go to the IAB for levels 1 to 3 and then IPP for supervisory and management qualifications from L4 up to masters degree.
There is still payroll professionalism out there and it needn't be completely outside the AAT, you can still be an AAT member and qualify in payroll. I say again, a payroll element within the foundation just would not be enough.
