Steve I hope you will help me.I have a job interview tomorrow for a practice role but it is only temporery. The title role is just "assistant" so I am a bit unsure as to what I am should expect. Can you help?

Most likely a bit of anything and everything from photocopying and data entry to accounts, vat, tax returns etc.
Why apply for the job without talking to the company first if you were unsure as to what would be expected? I've always found most directors/personnel departments were willing to discuss the position in further detail if you wanted more information whilst I was looking for a position.0 -
Be confident, positive, friendly.
Do research on the company.
Convince them your experience will let you slot into the job without trainee hand holding.

Thankyou for the advise but did not get offered the job. It was more tax which I don't deal with. Another agency **** up.

More like another Glynis **** up. While the agency thought you could do it or they wouldn't have sent you, it's your own lack of suitable skills that let you down again. You can't do tax, you can't do audit, you can't do this, you can't do that, you can't do blah de blah de blah. Why the hell are you persisting with a career in practice accountancy when you frequently and very publicly demonstrate you don't have anywhere near the skills required to do so?Steve why did you not reply to this?
Because he's not your personal mentor and being Christmas, he probably had better things to do. And what difference would it have made even if he had?0 -
Glynis I don't wish to sound disrespectful but I think you are obsessed with Steve. Why can't you do anything without asking Steve for help? I think it is obvious why he hasn't replied because he's got better things to do over Christmas!
Glynis you need to do more for yourself. I fear Steve might abandon these forums if you constantly nag him which would be a loss to us all as we all benifit from his advice but you treat him like a personal assistant.

If you want a job in practice though Glynis, in most cases, you are going to have to be willing to do tax, audit etc.
All practise jobs expect flexibility and if you are not willing to be flexible you really should be setting your sights elsewhere to be honest.
Unless you are able to get into a very large practice which has different departments for different tasks then it would probably be best for you to look at industry where you have more flexibilty to specialise.
As to your comments to Steve, I think it is pretty presumptious to expect him to be at your beck and call at all times, he, like the rest of us, has his own life too as well as going out of his way to help us like he does.

Hi Glynis,
I have not answered your thread for two reasons:
First, I have other commitments that need my full attention at the minute before I return to work to deal with the self-assessment and year end audit demands. This is also not my website and therefore I am not on here all the time.
Secondly, I feel that other contributors would offer more beneficial and appropriate advice about looking for jobs as opposed to me who has been in the same job for 11 years! I would not know about how agencies work etc so it would be inappropriate of me to give you any advice about agencies etc.
Whilst I sympathise with your situation, I cannot offer any further advice or help in your quest to work in practice, apart from that I have already given. There are other experienced contributors on here who can offer better advice than I can for you to consider.
I do wish you luck for 2011.
