I have registered for ATT finally and have ordered books for Business Tax paper which I hope to sit in November. From what I understand ATT recommend that we have reference material - Tolleys etc. Can anybody recommend books that I should be getting as I don't want to rush headlong into buying some for them to be no good.

Thanks

I have the tolleys manual and their internet site is excellent for the studying. I also bought the essential law book as I felt I needed it. My friend did the course without this book but I feel that it is important to read, even if it is only once, it isnt very exciting in places! I am studying VAT paper 5. I am exempt from paper 2 as I passed business tax in AAT. Did you not do it in AAT?

To be honest, I passed AAT 12 years ago so I really could do with recovering it even if i am exempt. It was so long ago I can't even remember the individual papers I sat.
Thanks foR the advice on the tax manuals tho, will certainly look into those

I took BTAP as i didn't know i was exempt  the accounting part is dead easy but the tax part is definitely harder than AAT, so it's well worth taking.

Right, I have the Business Tax text and I have ordered the Essential Accounting and Essential Law books
One last question! I notice you can take Tolleys Yellow & Orange Tax Handbooks into exams - is it beneficial to buy one or both of these books? what do others use?

I have only studied the VAT paper at the moment and to be honest you do not need the orange book. I had a 2009 one a friend gave me and I did not look at it during revision but I took it along and looked at it once. It did tell me the answer to the question about whether antiques were exempt or not. It probably gave me one for two points. Like most things, it depends on what sort of budget you are on.

For my 2008 BTAP exam I got the tolleys yellow on ebay for cheap. I know if you sign up with Tolleys training course you can get them cheaper too.

The point of the exams is to test your applied knowledge. You aren't expected to remember everything hence being allowed to take the texts in. I didn't use them much in BTAP but they were essential for personal tax, for sure. Half the answers are in the yellow books so they are great for looking up that bit you can't remember or to check you've remembered a rule right and get a few extra marks.

In real life we have reference material to look up, so I feel part of the exams are testing our ability to be able to look up the relevant legislation and this is an essential skill to have in practice.

Tolleys Orange is VAT so you won't need it for BTAP.

Working in practice you may not need the Yellow for the BTAP exam.

I used my 0708 books for my exam last week. There was only one (sadly long form) question that I needed this years for. I don't think there were any major business tax changes between this year and last year that won't be in the tax tables but I'm not sure. Depends on the price difference and your attitude to risk! The majority of the rules are in the older acts which are in every edition. Your tax book should show you which are the key acts you need so I'd have a look through there to see.
