I passed Business Tax - so chuffed. Well done Monsoon.

Got to buckle down to Personal Tax and Higher Business now!

Definitely think the ATT exams are harder though.

Well done to all who passed their ATT exams.

I sat three papers in May - Personal Tax, Higher Business Tax and ethics and passed all three. I'd agree they are quite tricky papers but just to give my insight into them that I hope others will find useful.

    1) I bought the books and studied in my own time at home, no distance learning or class work - the TQT books were very well writtern and covered all the material necessary - I didn't have any areas that I couldn't understand with a little application.

    2) I attended the ATT Conference - I found this very useful as it bought together a lot of my prior learning and at least gave me a feel for where I was in terms of knowledge.

    3) The exams are tricky but what nearly caught me out were the short form questions. For those who have yet to sit the papers there are 3 or 4 main (long form) questions that test your computational / advisory skills but then there are 10 - 15 short questions on any topic. An example was "Are the following items capital or revenue in nature?" If you don't know the answer (and it is nowhere as easy as you think as it is very technical !) then you need to look up the relevant section in the legislation - and if there is one tip I'd give it is to know where everything is in your legislation. Marking up the Tolley's is the difference between success and failure.

    4) The ethics and Practice Admin paper has the lowest pass rate (it was 60% this time) - I think in future it will be an e test but make no mistake you need to study hard and not just thinnk it all makes sense.

So well done to everyone who passed some this time - and I hope this gives the rest of you thinking about doing ATT the confidence to get on with it - it certainly built my confidence in advising my clients.

Now CTA or CIMA next - umm.

    Yeah - that's hardcore!!

Agreed, this is what I've been doing - as I work in tax already it all makes sense, I just need to learn some more bits.
    2) I attended the ATT Conference - I found this very useful as it bought together a lot of my prior learning and at least gave me a feel for where I was in terms of knowledge.
Thanks - I've never considered going but, given I have 2 in Nov, if there is one between now and then, then I may consider it.

Couldn't agree more. This is what I like about ATT - it's more practical than the AAT tax exams. The AAT gives you a good general grounding in tax but it only covers the basics. ATT is more 'real life' in that it teaches you how to find the things you don't know, not just relying on you to remember things (which in RL you would not do as we have information at our fingertips). Learning how to use the legislation is really, really good.

It doesn't make sense. I'm going to hate it, haha. The past papers look hideous.

CTA. I have a hankering after that one myself. I'm a glutton for punishment

The material covered is all very standard (CT comps, partnership profit share etc) but it is more that as someone studying alone it gives you a chance to meet up with other students and to talk with some very experienced tutors who can give you a great insight into any areas of concern and also exam technique which is oh so important.

There is another conference this autumn but not sure of the the dates yet,

Thanks, will consider it. I've winged it ok so far on my own but I think I need help with the Ethics one, I'm not looking forward to it at all.

I've just ordered all my books and stuff, and filled out the exam entry form, so I'm all set!

Good luck! And congrats on the paper 5 pass, I am doing that and paper 7 (ARGHhhhhhhh) in November. Sat on sofa trying to do paper 7 study today and it's minging.

On the plus side, I didn't know we got marks for our ATT exams. I thought I had just scraped through, but I got 69% Really happy with that.

I only got 59% for VAT but as long as I got a PASS I am happy. So hard fitting it in with full time work and family so I am so very pleased to get it. I ordered stationery today with MAAT after my name, that was a nice feeling, waited so long for that, hopefully not long to add the other ATT!! I did think about doing paper 7 too but I think it will be pushing it, fingers crossed for Nov, still a while to go but after trying some of this past paper I think I need it .... I think I know it and then I get the question wrong, it is so disheartening, anyway, will stop and enjoy this glass of wine and carry on tomorrow.
