Hello everybody. Does anyone know if members of the AAT can countersign a passport?

    There seems to be some confusion over whether you have to be FMAAT as opposed to MAAT but there are a whole range of other criteria that would qualify you to sign it, simply as a "member of a professional body" as opposed to an accountant - see the top thread I linked.

    Your countersignatory should be a professional person or a person of good standing in the community. If you are not sure who to ask, call the IPS Passport Adviceline on 0300 222 0000.

    These are examples of the type of person that would be suitable:

    accountant
    airline pilot
    articled clerk of a limited company
    assurance agent of recognised company
    bank/building society official
    barrister
    chairman/director of limited company
    chiropodist
    commissioner of oaths
    councillor (local or county)
    civil servant (permanent), but not someone who works for IPS
    dentist
    director/manager of a VAT-registered charity
    director/manager/personnel officer of a VAT-registered company
    engineer (with professional qualifications)
    financial services intermediary (eg a stockbroker or insurance broker)
    fire service official
    funeral director
    insurance agent (full time) of a recognised company
    journalist
    Justice of the Peace
    legal secretary (fellow or associate member of the Institute of Legal Secretaries and PAs)
    licensee of public house
    local government officer
    manager/personnel officer (of a limited company)
    member, associate or fellow of a professional body
    Member of Parliament
    Merchant Navy officer
    minister of a recognised religion (including Christian Science)
    nurse (RGN and RMN)
    officer of the armed services (active or retired)
    optician

    I’m happy to confirm that it has always been the case that any AAT licensed accountant can countersign a passport application providing they meet the Home Office requirements which are that;

    • You have known the applicant for at least 2 years
    • You believe that all the information the applicant has put on the form is true
    • You live in the UK
    • You have a British passport yourself

    This is because accountancy is a “recognised profession”

    You do NOT need to be a Chartered accountant.
