A couple of people at my works are doing ACCA and AAT and said that there is an IFRS For Dummies book by Steve Collings. I forgot to ask where you get it from does anyone on here know? It may be good for my ACCA studies.

Thanks in advance :)

    Hello Barry

I think the book you are referring to is due to be available from 20 April 2012. It is available to pre order on Amazon.

I bought Steve's IFRS summary book when I did DFS which really helped but I really like the idea of this Dummy book as I'm not very good at accounting standards as I like tax better. There is a Taxfor Dummies book but I think it's for 2010/11 so won't be good for me. I'll probably buy Steve's auditing book when I do ACCA P7 but it looks quite immense at 650 pages!

Is this a textbook as I am looking for textbooks to help me through F7 if I pass F8??

Steve thanks for writing this book!

I hope you find it useful Barry. The book is at typesetting stage at the moment but is due out (in the UK) on 20 April 2012. If you're located overseas, however, you may not be able to get it from Amazon until May 2012 as there is usually a delay in shipping the book overseas so if you used Amazon.com (rather than Amazon.co.uk) you may experience a couple of weeks delay.

The book is NOT a text book and has been written for both students and professional accountants and is bang up to date for all the new IFRSs that have come out for consolidated accounts/associates and joint ventures and fair value measurement (IFRS 13). As with all 'For Dummies' books it is written in a down-to-earth style with not much technical jargon (I have had to really simplify a lot of terminology so that it fits in with the For Dummies brand).

I hope it helps you with your studies/work projects.

    Regards

    steve

Steve is there any way I can get hold of this book earlier? ACCA students get there results in Februaey and this book seems not to be released until April. I need to have it before then if I am doing F7.

No offense to Steve here but Glynis you would be much better off with a text book designed with the F7 syllabus in mind, like Clare Finch's one.

Steve's book, as I understand, may not be tailored to the ACCA exam like a text book would be, probably giving more info than is required and looking a little overwhelming.

I'm sure Steve will correct me if I am wrong

Also, I'm not sure how you expect to get hold of a book before it is published!

Apparently an updated version of Claire Finchs' book is also out soon - next month I think.

I used it for my FNST exam and thought it was FAB :) Probably going to get the updated version for my CFAB financial accounting top up paper later on this year. One of my best purchases to date!

Ps Sorry to threadjack, but can anyone share their thoughts on "students guide to auditing" from the same series ? Any good for AAT or too in depth ?

I have got that book by Claire Finch but I need some more books because I am a self studier.
Steve must be able to try and get it published before April. By the sounds of it it is already written.

I didn't take the AAT audit option, but I did use this book for my F8 ACCA exam. It is written by the previous ACCA Audit examiner, and follows the same similar, easy to understand style as Claire's book - ie colour coded sections, mnemonics, etc.

If i remember correctly, it compares the whole auditing process to a car journey, which is a theme that runs throughout the whole book!

Glynis, buy a text book from a tuition provider, (BPP/Kaplan, etc), as these are the only texts that are approved by the ACCA examiners.

Any additional books should be used to complement the study texts.

I have invested in Get Through guides which I hope will work. I also bought Steve's auditing book for my F8 studies but it's so big I couldn't possibly read all of it. At nearly 700 pages how on earth is a home student supposed to read all that.

Glynis you best give ACCA up now then, as both the F6 and F9 ACCA study texts by Kaplan are both over 800 pages - on top of that you have additional technical reading from ACCA printed papers, revision questions and past papers to go through. Studying is not easy - which is the point. If it was easy everyone would pass and the qualification would be worthless.

Stop finding excuses and moaning and get on with it like everyone else. You are not the only one having to pay for study texts, exam fees and the annual ACCA fee yourself - you are just the only one going on about it.

Lets hope that you have been successful in F8 Audit exam in 2 weeks time, so you can move onto another paper.

    Thanks for the info Richard.

I love the layout of the Claire Finch book - so I a m quite tempted by this one. Good to know that it will also be of use for further studies.

    Glynis,

As people have already said additional material complements your study text. I have a copy of Steve's auditing book and this book (I think) is designed for real world auditors but I would say students would benefit from its practical approach.

Remember you only get out what you put in. Text books/additional books by Steve Collings or Claire Finch will not guarantee a successful outcome in the exam - you need to put the effort in also.

I also think that you would be better receiving tuition than home study if you are still struggling with F8.

I have no control over when the publisher prints the book. There is a very, very long process involved after writing has finished which is done under extremely tight deadlines, so the publishing date is fixed.

My IFRS For Dummies can be used by students - there is a student element included in the style of writing, but my book is not completely aimed at professional examinations as the target audience is very wide (professional accountants/students/investors etc).

Regarding your comments on my auditing book. Again, this book was written with a certain audience in mind - i.e. professional auditors and is not a text book.

If you're not sitting exams until the June diet then you will still get the Dummies book in time for the revision phase.

    Regards

    Steve

I've checked as well and mine says the same :)

I wasn't expecting it until the end of the month. Downside though means I've no excuse to delay studying!

Mine arrived yesterday and I just hope it helps me with F7. Nothing in that paper makes sense and it is far worse than DSS was at AAT level. Does anyone know if Steve or Sandy run courses on F7 or financial accounting courses? I'm panicking like hell at the minute.

    Hi Glynis,

Have you looked at this site:

    http://www.kieranmaguire.co.uk/Kieran/ACCA_F7/ACCA_F7.html

As exam time approaches you may find more questions uploaded, I found his p2 questions particularly helpful when I did it.

Also do you have a revision kit yet? I found the kaplan ones very helpful as they gave you online content as well if you bought them new with the code for access.

Other than that opentuition use to have very good videos and concise notes.

I notice you said you used gtg, personally I found them very confusing and would not recommend them, but I only had them as addtional study aids not the main ones.

    Good luck
