De-Register as an Employer

My client no longer employs anyone and is unlikely to in the near future, so wants to cancel his registration as an employer. Please can someone remind me how to do this???? Thank you.

    Personally, I'd just phone them and explain.

    Well that wasn't as simple as it sounds. Finally got through to a human being at HMRC who says the only way to end the PAYE scheme is to write them a letter!

    You beat me to it. Just read the thread; we always write to tell them to close a scheme, I'd worry that if I just told them over the phone they wouldn't process it properly, my client would get a penalty for not doing the P35 and we'd have no paper trail. Call me old-fashioned.

    Also, writing a letter takes 5 minutes whereas phoning can take hours, depending on how many of their staff have bothered to show up for work!

    It will probably be 3... or 4.... or 5 letters.

    HMRC are often hopeless at closing PAYE schemes.
