    Congratulations

What option(s) did you do? Are you moving onto CTA now?

I'm doing personal tax in November (haven't even looked at the legislation yet), Ethics in Dec, Law in Jan and Business Compliance in May 2013.

No to CTA, at my age I was just happy to get AAT and ATT, any further will not make a difference to my practice and to be honest I have had enough of the studying, although I have learnt a huge amount and glad I did it, I am also happy to stop.
I did VAT then personal tax then LAW then ETHICS. I have an exemption from business tax due to AAT.
I passed VAT and personal tax first attempts but LAW took 5 and ETHICS 2. Ethics is by far easier than LAW. If you are doing Ethics in Dec my personal view is that you may need longer for LAW as it is a tough area, but having said that you may have a good memory and be okay.

How long did it take you to revise for law and how long did it take for ethics? Also, did you use the legislation much in the exams?

    Thanks for your help

I didnt even buy the legislations, my thoughts were that by the time you have searched the books you could have written more. I studied for about 12 weeks on law and that included all the resits. You really have to know that book inside out, I made the mistake of thinking it was an e assessment and would be easy but it cost me £65 each resit to find out you have to study hard. With ethics I probably studied for 4 weeks. I got 39 first attempt and 47 the second. Who are you studying with, you will probably find that the computer exams are not the same as your practise ones with your training provider, the real exams are a lot harder. I work full time, two children and a house to keep so studying does take me longer than a young free and single student.

Thanks for all your help Noodles, especially your note regarding the legislation.

I'm studying with Tolley and I think I'll just stick to practising questions rather than getting bogged down with the legislation.

Re law and ethics, I think I've got the ATT law book, a CCAB money laundering document somewhere, and then a couple of booklets with multiple choice questions.

Did you enjoy the VAT paper; does it help a lot in the real world?

'yes I did enjoy the VAT paper and it did give me a lot more knowledge for my job. It wasnt too bad an exam and I studied with tolleys too and that prepared me well for the exam. The problem with the e assessments is that the training providers have not seen the exam so they find it hard to know the difficulty of the questions. The actual questions were much harder. I also bought the i pass cd from BPP which i found was very useful, if you have a spare £50 I think it is worth getting this cd for LAW and ETHICS. These CD's gave me more knowledge but in my opinion, the actual exam was still of a higher level but achievable. As you can re sit as many times as you like, it can be costly but you will get it. I wasnt worried about the cost, I just wanted to get it and I knew I would eventually so i stayed positive and yipee, today I did it. Enjoying a nice glass of wine as i type

Congratulations, Noodles! Well done you! I bet that's an amazing feeling!

Reader: make up your own mind on the legislation. I used it extensively and flew through the exam, but you need to know how to use the legislation, and have half an idea of how to find stuff so if you're going to use it, it must be a big part of your study. My memory is not good, so to be able to "take the answers in" with me was a godsend.

I also believe that ATT is a practical qualification and even if you don't take the legislation in with you because you decide that's not your exam style, it teaches you an invaluable practical skill - since learning ATT, I can't count the number of times I have gone to my Tolley's Yellow / Orange and gone right back to the particulat Act to read the precise wording. I am a better tax advisor for it, so I highly recommend learning how to use it.

Good luck, and congrats again noodles!!

Both very good points- I was watching a video lecture by Simon Groom of Tolley re: legislation, and I'm being to understand the way "the leg" is set out, i.e chronologically from 1a-1c, and then various things in parts 2 and 3.

If I actually bothered to use the leg I think it would be surprisingly useful.
