Accounting Technician Status?
Hi Velen,

Tricky question. My immediate response would be to say Asst Accountant. But, experience has to be taken into account. An MAAT with a few years experience may be accepted for jobs that were advertised as accountant within industry.

Seamus0 -

Thanks for your reply. Does that mean its over and well above an account officer and not further than an accountant?0 -

I'm sure there are specific cases that would contradict me, and MAATΓΒ’??s may hold account clerk positions, but generally speaking I would think MAAT's would be aiming above this grade. Accountant grade would be harder achieved with a technician qualification. As for higher than Accountant, then I would imagine only being AAT qualified would restrict your progress.0 -

According to you, an Accounting Technician would fit the status of an account officer? I thought it was a higher status than an account officer...0 -

<< I thought it was a higher status than an account officer... >>

*Blush* I had have to agree, as I've never come across the term account officer! *Blush*

I can only refer to the companies I've worked for that had large accountancy departments (Dell & GE). An AAT would be taken on as an assistant accountant. It would then be possible to work up to accountant level after a couple of years.

*Edit number 2* However those that had technician grades that went on to become accountants were studying for qualified accountant quals.0 -
Accounting Technician Status?
Thanks for re-assuring me...

In fact the accounts officer is a higher status than the account clerk. Usually, an account officer is the supervisor of accounts clerks.

The assistant accountant is a higher status than the accounts officer. I thought, the Technician status lies between these two. I guess i'm right then...

Thanks again.0 -
Accounting Technician Status?
I only wish I had that sort of status. I am currently Sales Ledger Clerk due to finish Technician in June. I haven't got a bit of man acc experience which I am desprately trying to get from my manager. I am looking for a new job at the minute but have been turned down for loads of interviews because of lack of experience. One interview I got was 'Sales Ledger Clerk' looking to progress to man accs within 3-4 years!!!!!!!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!! makes the work I have put into my aat pointless!0 -

Hi Astro
I know what you mean, you get stuck in a rut and the people around you don't really want to help. I was on purchase ledger for 2 years and everytime I was asked what area do you want to progress to I said management accounts, but then I was transfered to the cash office where i spend my day bankng money and keying onto a spreadsheet. Once I get my Tech results if all goes well I will be looking for another job and hopefully be able to progress to where I want to be.0 -

In parts of the civil service, MAAT's with several years' experience are Financial Controllers (Senior Financial Officers of integrated project teams). Currently I'm on temporary promotion as one such with responsibility for budgets and financial accounts for 8 million pounds' worth (annually) of IT projects with a 2.5 million staff budget. The job is normally for qualified accountants or "those with equivalent competences" which is what experienced MAATs/Technicians are deemed to have, at least by government depts.0
