Hi everyone

For those that may be interested I've finally passed the RAP and got the degree. I'm sorry to start a thread blowing my own trumpet but there seems to be so little information about it out there that I thought I'd share my thoughts.

I originally submitted it in May 2012 and failed. I received very detailed feedback, which was excellent, but made me realise I'd gone seriously wrong! So I knew I didn't have time to resubmit for November 2012 (I didn't get the result until the end of September 2012). I planned to resubmit in May 2013 but had quite a lot to do - I as good as started again from scratch - and was busy with the P papers, so I didn't quite get it finished. So I finally resubmitted in November 2013. I realised just before I submitted that they seem to have increased the word count, and then panicked that I hadn't written enough but it was too late to start changing it then.

My tips for anyone doing this project are:
  • Find a mentor who has experience in this and has some idea of what it takes to pass. Looking back I think my first mentor only really helped me write a decently written report, rather than helping me write a report about the right thing! I changed mentors for my resubmission.
  • The project, in my opinion, is more about the topic than the organisation. The organisation is purely a setting in which to write about your topic.
  • Define your topic clearly at the beginning, and make sure everything in the rest of report is relevant to it. Looking back at my first attempt I went off on such a tangent that my report ending up being about completely the wrong thing!
Good luck to anyone attempting this, it's hard work but can be done with a lot of perseverance!!

Congratulations on being awarded a degree, nice to see your studies progress.

Sounds a bit frustrating that your first report got to submissions stage without anyone highlighting you'd gone in a slightly wrong direction? It is good to have a mentor to help but you'd think Oxford Brookes would be more involved?

    Thanks PGM.
Yeah it was really annoying that my first mentor didn't seem to know I'd gone seriously wrong! But OBU don't get involved at all - the first they know of anyone doing the project is when you first submit it. They don't provide the mentors - it's up to us to find someone. At the time, I thought my first mentor had more experience with these. OBU do provide a service, through their website I think, where people can register as mentors and be found by students. I presume these will have to demonstrate the required level of knowledge/experience before they can be added to the list. I never used it though as I already had a second contact who helped me realise exactly where I had gone wrong.
