I have been approached by a potential new client, only problem is they use Xero which not a package I am familiar with. The system has already been set up, so I will be taking over the bookkeeping role. I would appreciate some feedback from anyone who has used it. Will it be easy for me to pick it up as I go along? Or should I get some training?

Xero is pretty intuitive so I wouldn't have thought you'd have much problem - their training resources are pretty good as mentioned above and you should get access to a 'Demo' company so if you are ever not sure how something works you can try it out in a consequence free environment!
You'll probably want 'Adviser' level access so you can see everything and post journals etc. - I think it's a great package overall and am using it more and more.2 -

Xero is, in my opinion, the best small business bookkeeping software out there, for easy of use and functionality. Wish they would bring the price down though I think they could dominate the market much more if they could compete with Sage/VT etc on price!
Regarding your question, you could just sign up for a trial period and play around with it, I don't think it'd take you long to get to grips with it...1 -
