What services can I provide?
Hi

Becoming a self employed member wont authorise you to carryout any additional tasks, unless you obtain a reporting licience (which is only relevant if you have an incorporated charity as a clientw ith a turnover of £90k - £250k).

Generally you can offer any services you are competently trained for, obviously you cant offer statutory audit services unless you're a qualified auditor. If you're an AAT member and your turnover from accounting self employment is £5000 or more per anum, you'll need to register with the AAT.

Neil0 -

What services can I provide?
I would just like to clarify some of the points Neil has made and what the AAT's regulations are regarding self-employment.

If you are a full or fellow member of the AAT and you are offering accountancy, taxation or related consultancy services to the public as a sole trader, a partner in a partnership or through a limited company you must register on our scheme for self-employed members. The idea about being registered is so that the public and other clients can be confident that your work is regulated and overseen by a professional body. As you know, anyone can call themselves an accountant but this helps to demonstrate that you've actually got something to back it up.

The scheme covers 14 different services self-employed members can be approved to offer, which fall under the headings of accountancy, taxation or related consultancy services. If you are self-employed and undertake work that does not fall under theses services you do not need to register on the scheme but you must complete an exemption form. And as Neil has said you should only undertake work you are competent to offer and you can't undertake audit work unless you are a registered auditor.

You can find out more about the scheme for self-employed members at http://www.aat.org.uk/members/selfemploy_intro.cfm?id=16 and for full details on the regulations you can download a copy of the Guidelines and Regulations for Self-employed Members at http://www.aat.org.uk/docs/members/SEM_guidelines_and_regs.pdf

If you have any further questions or you would like us to send you a self-employment pack please contact me on 020 7415 7571.

Susannah0 -
