Hello,. I am trying to remember variances and am really struggling

Have got technician exams in a week and wondering what I am doing there

It doesnt help either that we were taught the way like so - AQ x AP SQ X SP etc and in the books its different, does anybody have a foolproof method of remembering these in this layout ? Now the tutor that taught us by this way doesnt teach us anymore, and its too late to try and learn the method in the book. Have been studying all day and feeling desperate !

Thanks

    VARIANCES - HELP !!!

    Hi

Last year I felt just the same and searched this site daily for help!

Then I found this on here:

V S B (volume = std x budgeted)
E S A (efficiency = std x actual)
C B A (capacity = budgeted x actual)

To remember it - think of a noughts and crosses grid,
put the three letters V volume E efficiency C capacity under each other
then in the next column put S standard in the two 'upper' rows,
move to the right and put A actual in 'lower' two rows
the two gaps are filled by B budgeted.

if that too confusing put another way

step 1 V
    step 2 V S
    step 3 V S
    Step 4 V S B
E
    E S
    E S A
    E S A
C
    C
    C - A
    C B A

I hope that it was you were looking for - my apologies if it's not or if I've made you feel worse.

Good luck (and if you have any influence please pray for me, DFS and PTC loom)

(PS sorry about the hyphens had to put them in to get the spacing right!)

thanks very much will try that
am thinking of learning the new way from the book as it seems more logical.

Tutors shouldnt teach us different ways than from the book, this year the tutor does it the way in the book and assumes we know it. Half of the class has taught themselves the new way and the other half are struggling on.

The more studying I do for the exams, the better I feel, so had better crack on, I think I am mad doing business and personal tax too. Am regretting it really. Still its too late now.

Thanks again

I know just how you feel.

I'm doing DFS and PTC and have resigned myself to home-studying PTC and resitting again in December - the more time I spend on trying to retain any PTC the less DFS I remember when I pick up a question!

Gook luck!

PS Sorry about the state of my previous message it was meant to make it easier to understand.. unfortunately formatting changes when it appears as a message.

    Hiya

Here's another way to try to remember them. It worked for me in my Intermediate and Technician exams and for a few of my classmates ;-)

all you have to remember is EEC and SHEEPCAR. Yes yes I know, sounds stupid but watch ........

SHEEPCAR reminds you of BASAAB right, so you get:

B udgeted
E xpenditure is
A ctual

S tandard
E fficiency is
A ctual

A ctual
C apacity is
B udgeted

How's that? Good luck!

Jasper x

I passed my exams a couple of years ago, and am now a full member. I remembered the variances formulae like this:

Visible (VSB = Volume = Standard x Budget)
Essay (ESA = Efficiency = Standard x Actual)
Cab (CAB = Capacity = Actual x Budget)

That might help.

Good luck to all of you in your exams this month.

Sue.
