Before i start i just have to emphasise that i have enjoyed the AAT course and it has given me great benefits in my career. I do though offer this as constructive critisism;

I have recently finished the AAT technician and i am having great trouble finishing all the (what i regard as unecessary) other parts of the course, such as MAS projects. Why are these necessary. Surely a basic management module with one exam, and no waiting about all summer for a tutor to sign it off, would be a better option?

Coursework should prove knowledge in practice situation, but from personal experience (not only from AAT coursework) it is easier to create an irrevlevant situation and compose a piece of coursework, then it is to find the perfect work situation and write about (fitting all the criteria).

This is probably beginning to sound like a rant now, but i think that for a student who is working full time and studying part time it is much more practical to study towards an exam then it is to have to develop a situatuion and write about it in order to fit certain assesment criteria. Because at the end of the day (whilst studying for the AAT) who has completed a report at work that is relevant all to the MAS criteria ( I mean before exaggerating what you've done). I know i haven't.

Personally i think a move towards tougher/more exams and a sudden disappearance of "coursework" would be of favour to AAT students.

I have time to learn and work. but i do not have time to learn work and make things up!

This is a forum and these are my thoughts, i am not trying to degrade what i regarde as a quality qualification.

Do you agree or disagree let me know?

    Hi

I sort of see where you are coming from.

I can understand why the AAT chose an NVQ route, at the time NVQs were 'trendy'. But I dont think a vocational structered qualification is suited to a professional occupation. Also, NVQs lack continuity since most (including parts of the AAT) are assessed by course work. The individual students course work will vary as may colleges method of assessment, therefore moving away from any standardisation. Some people may use work place evidence, but the way something is done in one employemnt may vary form another employment.

Before starting the AAT I looked at ACCA's CAT scheme. Althought the CAT scheme isn't as good as the AAT scheme (CAT is not so broad a syllabus, you only need 40% to pass CAT technician stage = low standards), the way CAT is organised is more straight forward - you do the exams and complete a work record, just like the full ACCA qualification or the CIMA qualification. This also makes CAT more accesible since you dont have to be registered with a college for any of it, unlike the AAT.

Neil

    I have taken all my technician exams and am now attempting the MAS project and can say, right at this moment I wish we didn't have to do it! However I do see the validity of the project and hope that I only have to add a little thoughts on what I would do if I was a manager! Having to do a professional report on something that can make a difference is surely a good thing, if it only makes you think about improvements that can be made.

However I'm sure that as soon as my project becomes something more than just thoughts in my head, I will wholeheartedly agree with you.

Annette

P.S. Neil, have you done your project yet?

    Hi

Done the project as far as the planning and compiling it, just the matter of typing it into a proper layout. Im a bit of a lazy arse really, so it will probably take me 'til christmas just to think about doing it! :os

Neil
