I started my AAT Accounting course in September.
Has anyone else experienced the poor quality of the teaching staff?
I have my first exam on November 25th which is 3 weeks away, we have only just gone through the debit and credit side of things, (and got my head round that) We got a practise exam paper last thursday no one has even gone through and told us what the words mean such as Sales Ledger, Trail Balance,

We have had one lesson of Profit and Loss and most of that was him writing numbers on the board and not explaining what they were or why you would put them there.

One lesson on Petty Cash (1 hour lessons)

When you ask the tutor for help he just tells me "you will be fine in your exam dont worry about it"

Or when he writes something on the board like profit and loss he turns and says easy isnt it, erm yes when you have worked in accounts for 10 years !!
I have never worked in accounts before these words are like a foreign language to me !!!

All i want to do is pass my exams but i feel i wont with the poor attitude of tutors and the lack of help when asking for it!

I assume this is at a college? Have you complained to anyone about it? Perhaps if there are a few of you who feel the same you could speak the to Head of Department. We had a particularly bad tutor last year for PEV at Technician level and a few had to re-sit the exam. Those who failed explained to the H of D the problem and this tutor didn't re-appear after Xmas.0 -

Thanks for replying

Yes this is at College, The only person i have complained to is him.
I think i will speak to the Head of Department see what they say i should do.
I know you get alot of homework with this course but i am having to look up what things mean and try and teach myself how to do profit and loss, amongst other things. When you have something to work from its alittle easier than trying to figure things out from scratch.

0 -

If you go over to the 'Foundation' message board, you will find there are others in your situation, i.e just starting out and a bit confused about things. You can always ask for advice and guidance there.0 -

No, it's a new board and it just needs a few people to start posting to get it going.0 -

If you are at a college, try and find out if there are any Financial Training Company's around near you that you can go to, they are specifically for AAT, ACCA CIMA etc. They are alot better than a college0 -

I did my foundation level at a college - I then moved on to do my intermediate and techncian (which I am still studying) at a private training company locally. There are only 12 students in the class, therefore we get much more 1 to 1 time. Standard practice is that we read through the textbooks and assessment kits (BPP) following a rough schedule set by the tutor... We then ask for help as and when needed... And the tutor is always giving us other activities. etc. to do and has access to all past papers. etc.
By moving I felt much happier. I started intermediate at the same college that I did my foundation at but they spent the first 3 weeks (3 days - I was on day release) rrefreshing on double entry bookkeeping for those that needed a refresher or hadn't passed their foundation exam. It makes me sound awfully big-headed but I felt it was holding me back!!! The private training company is much the better method for me...
Maybe you should speak to somone at the college that deals with the tutoring and put your views accross.
Good luck with it!!!
Laura0
