How many units at one time?

Hello!

I am just coming to the end of my Intermediate level (please god!) and I need to think about ordering my materials for the next level. For all you veterens of technician level, how many units would you say it is possible to do at one time, without having any kind of breakdown? I am doing home study.

Also, are any of you doing home study? Who are you doing it through? What do you think of them? I am with BPP and they were great for Foundation but not so great for Intermediate and their tutors are not very helpful and they still haven't reported my success in some Foundation units that I passed in June!

Thanks you!

How many units at one time?

I am doing all the units but am studying at college one day a week. Have just taken my personal tax exam, doing the others in June. The course is very intensive, but if you put the time in and try not to get left behind, then I think you'll cope. Think it probably depends if you have sufficient support there when you need it.
Cant comment on home studies as havent experienced BPP or others, but you can obviously work at home, so thats not a problem. Id say its probably down to personal choice how well you cope under pressure and to do the questions, and/or practice papers in your text books to see where you need further input or help. Dont know what anyone else thinks?

I coudl not imagine doing home study for Technician level, its just tooooo intensive especially DFS and the tax papers. In tech level i woudl nto do more than 2 units at a time really.

How many units at one time?

    Hi

I do home study and find the best thing to do is plan how long you take, and allow a reasonably equal time for each unit. But remember, you can do skills tests at any time so you be a bit more flexible with those. Also the units at technician assessed by skills tests/devolveds tend to be the slightly easier ones. So sort out a 'timetable' for the examination ones first and work around that.

Neil

I also did the Foundation and Interemidiate via home study with FTC. I found this pretty tough. Thinking the workload would be harder for Technician I decided to carry on with the FTC but do it at their college for the evening, and boy what a difference that made.

I managed to fly through PEV and PCR in June , and OCMC in the summer and I did really well with last week's DFS sitting, though Business Tax was tough.

My advice would be:

Do PEV & PCR for June 05. Part of the course seems to overlap. And then I'd do DFS in Dec 05. (Or DFS Summer, PEV/PCR winter).

Those are the three main units to do:

You then have a choice of 2 from 4 for: Credit Control (No exam), Auditing (No exam), Business Tax (Exam) and Personal Tax (Exam) . If you need to do a tax one then if you have the time wait to June 06, if not squeeze it in with DFS. Failing that do the units with no exams!

How many units at one time?

    Hello
Sorry Angelic for piggy backing on your question but you are asking exactly what I wanted to ask and Iâ??m new to this kinda thing. I hope itâ??s not inappropriate??!!
I am studying through home learning too and have just done my exams for foundation and intermediate level (I started in May this year and hope start to work in accounts in the new year), Iâ??m planning to start technical level in Feb and was hoping Iâ??d be up to scratch for exams in June. Is this a silly thing to attempt??
I could also use any advice on a course provider if anybody can recommend one as the one I have been using (NEC Cambs) donâ??t do technical level.
Also, as Iâ??m completely new to this I donâ??t know which to choose from the two out of four options: Credit Control, Auditing, Business Tax and Personal Tax as the optional. Anybody fancy weighing up the pros and cons of doing each?
Thanks for any advice and best of Irish luck for the results in Feb..

Thanks a million

Paul T
Hi. I am home learning - Intermediate at the moment - with Premier Training. I would recommend them for any of the levels as they are very helpful friendly and professional.

www.premiertraining.co.uk

My advice would be, and sorry but I am not a home study person, to do say a Tax and PEV (definitely PEV first as it is a smallish step up from Costing on Intermidate) so you have a tough and an easier paper to sit in December. Then I would do DFS and PCR for June. This is assuming you want it all over and done with within a year.

For a two year plan I would say PEV first (december sitting) then a Tax or DFS (June sitting), PCR in the December sitting and whatever unit you have remaining last.

I would say whatever you chose, a one or two year study plan, definitely sit PEV first as there is a fair bit of overlap from intermediate Costing and its a nice 'break in'.

Of course with the syllabus changing this might not necessarily be the case (I did sit PEV on the first sitting of the new syllabus and it seemed a small step up).

Hope this helps
Mandy

How many units at one time?

I started tech level in September with the intention of sitting DFS, PEV, and PCR this December. I study at home and thought it would not be a problem.
However, DFS is so long-winded that I decided to sit it next June instead.
Not saying that you could not manage it, though. All I am saying is that it was too much for me in one go.

I wish that I had taken a tax exam instead this December though!

How many units at one time?

Sorry Paul , I'm piggy-backing on your question...........

I started AAT Technician in Nov 04 cos I was made redundant and wanted to a) fill my days and b) put a formal qualification to my experience.

I'm doing home study, also with Premier Training, and thought I would elect to do all the exams in June 05 (I'm doing the 2 tax modules, not audit and cash mgt). Since then, I've found a job but its only a contract for 8 months. It is full time though......

Can anyone advise if I'm being hopelessy unrealisitic about wanting to sit everything in Jun ? I've just about finished my first module (Personal Tax) which I've done in about a month and it all pretty much makes sense (apart from CGT taer relief and chattels but lets not go into that here............) Are the other units longer/more involved ??

I've worked in accounts for the past 10 years so have practical experience I can fall back on.......

Would love to hear if anyone is in similar situation

Thanks

How many units at one time?

    Hi Paul,

Of course I don't mind you piggy backing! It's good to know that I'm not the only one in this situation.

I've now ordered some stuff from BPP and am going to attempt home study again.

I'm sitting PEV and PCR in June and DFS in December. I've also orderd the materials for MAS, and also got the Obsorne book that was highly recommded on here. I've then got to decide about my options, possibly the two tax ones, to probably take in June 2006.

That should mean that I am doing no more than two modules per six month period and also leaves a bit of slack in case of retakes, cos let's face it - I can't rule them out.

I've also got skills tests for FRA and ECR (Intermediate!) next week and then two weeks to do the whole of PRR (intermediate) so that I can start PEV and PCR in Janaury.

Wish me luck!
