Hi I am taking PCR, DFS and Personal Tax next term from January at college. Anyone who has done these units, can you tell me what they are like and how hard they are. I am really concerned about having 3 exams in June 2005 and want to know the effort I will need to put in.

I haven't done PCR this term, but I've just finished the other two. I think it differs person to person. I would say 60% of our class found DFS harder than PTC but I was one of those who picked DFS up better. DFS is tricky and will require a lot of hard work outside college, and tax is just about learning many different rules and knowing which ones to apply, and when. If you've done business tax, which we haven't, I'm also told you pick the second one up pretty well if you've done ok with the first.0 -

Hi

I'm doing home study and am just completing the personal tax module. Its taken me about a month doing probably about 4 hours of study a week.

If you've got a good memory then you should be fine as its mostly remembering rules and when to apply them (most of them don't make any logical sense but, hey, this is tax after all.............)

If you haven't already got it, Osbourne books do a great study text. Its what I'm using and I find their explanations and examples are really clear and well laid out.

Haven't started DFS and PCR yet but hoping to sit all the exams in Jun 05. Am I being over-optimistic ??

Nicky :-)0 -

hiya

I completed my technician level within a year at college, but it took a lot of home study too.

PCR you should pick up within a couple of months, but I would say get as many previous exam papers as possible.

Tax is fiddley, I agree, there are so many little rules to consider and the examiner seems to be a real meanie and is set on catching us all out (which I feel is grossly unfair as we have the pressure of an exam, and not everyone is confident to say that XYZ is except and doesn't need to be worked out)

DFS I think is quite straight forward, but it does take a lot of practices, again get hold of as many previous exam papers as you possibly can). There is the odd thing in DFS like working out Goodwill and Capital Expenidutes on a P&L which could trip you up, but like I said work at it and you'll get through. There are also the FRSs and SSAPs to remember but they are usually not massive parts of the paper and collect a couple of marks each.

I hope this helps
Mandy0 -

I have only done the PTC exam and my MAS project. The tax exam was easier than I thought, although you never know what is going to be in it. The rules are hard to remember as you think you have one bit then forget something else. But, with lots of practice at home it eventually sinks in. Am studying DFS and found it hard but not too bad - it has suffered on behalf of me taking the tax exam in December. So hopefully I can devote more time to it now. I am taking the other exams in June. I would say the Osbourne books are great, and practice as many past papers as possible as sometimes similar questions arise.0
