Not sure if this helps but I asked a couple of accountants how they remember the Cr / Dr thing which when you start is an absolute nightmare. Best was A & E = Debit - i.e. you go into an A & E.

My tutor also uses the DR = Drin and Crout (in and out) silly but helps to remember - apart from those times when the kids won't leave me alone I've worked 12 straight hours at work and am trying to finish the so called 3 hours homework !

    Hi

My tutor at college has always drummed this method of learning into us from the start.

Cr Dr

A(assets) L(liabilities)

E(expenses) S(sales/income)

It spells out ALES. At first it didnt make much sense but when you take into consideration what you are posting it almost always seems to fit into this pattern. I have found it really useful as the course has progressed.

Hope it may be some use to others

Darren

    Hi All,

To remember which sides to increase the account, my tutor told us the follow - Dead and Click

Debits increase for
E -Expenses
A - Assets
D - Debtors

Credits incrase for
L - Liabilities
I - Income
C - Captial

So all you need to rember from there is what sort of account you are looking at, then you can work out which side of double entry you need to use!! - that's where i get confused now.

Anyway - hope it helps a little.

Mark.
