hi all,

having a few problems getting clarity on advancement from technician level. as i understand it:

CIMA - if i complete technician i get full exemption from 1st year and therefore must complete managerial levels 1 & 2 and then strategic level.

ACCA (this is where it gets a bit hazy) - when i called acca they said i could only fasttrack if i had a degree as well as aat, is that correct? and if so, as i don't have a degree, how long would it take to complete acca, 3 or 4 years?

any info appreciated.

If you have full technician you are exempt from the whole of stage 1, you will just have stage 2 and 3 to do. The time this takes depends solely on your circumstances, what your commitments are and how much study you can put into it.

Good luck

Annette

    Hi

Like Annette says, youll be exempt from first stage of ACCA having completed technician.

Similar with CIMA. The 'first' stage of CIMA (called Business Accounting) is considered seperate from the rest, and if you have AAT you'll be exempt from it. Then you complete Managerial Stage (6 papers) then the Strategic stage (3 papers). Once you have completed these you take the test of professional competence.

There does seem to be a lot of mis-understanding with exemptions. There is a letter in the latest edition of Accounting Technician form someone who thinks that they must have completed audit at Technician level in order to take advatage of the exemptions for ACCA, and now having done technician is looking to 'top up' with audit. Of course, since audit features in ACCA it is an advantage, but not compulsory.

Have a look at the CIMA and ACCA sites and perhaps email them for confirmation.

Neil

I noticed that letter Neil, the only thing I can think is that they meant ACA as I think they require Audit,

Annette

    Hi

You could be right there, may they had a typo? But it is still possible to do ACA without audit, only the top up units would be different.

CIPFA is the body that requires Audit and CMCC to be taken at AAT. As public accounts do not require tax returns. I am also preety certain that ICAEW require Audit.

    Hi

It is still possible to progress to ICAEW without the AAT audit option. However the student wouldnt be able to take the ICAEW audit top-up paper and gain exemption from ICAEW's audit paper.
