i have concluded that i am thick.
i revised on 4 previous papers and none of them had Statement of total recognisable losses and gains. All previous papers had shares at £1.00 and none of them talked about selling shares. they only had one subsidery company.
i have decided i liked the previous papers because they seemed alot more simple and flowing :-)
my brain has now cracked and i have to do PCR tomorrow!!!!
Thanks AAT
see you all in December
XXXXXXXXXXXXXX
I will be with you in Dec too. I am the same. I studied all past papers and went into the exam this morning feeling confident. Now I know I failed. I couldn't work out the shares at all, I couldn't balance my balance sheet. The losses and gains I didn't have a clue and also the movement of shares...again my brain died on me. Ok with the net cash flow balanced that, Frs's I think I was ok with. The Goodwill I worked out to be 3420 after writting off the depreciation. This I think is also wrong cause nobody else got that answer. I am so P...ed off. Please AAT give me an easy paper tomorrow...just so I won't feel I have wasted the last 3 years of my life.
0 -

I feel just the same. I have already failed this once and have worked so hard. never, ever again. Why do they do this to us? how do they expect us to pass ?0 -

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this mornings was hard. Again it was not like all previous papers, gains and losses??????. Well going to go and have another look at PCR. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE FOR TOMORROW
0 -

oh no - I put something about it was for the users of accounts, the stewardship of the entity and all that, true and fair etc etc. I have concluded that I am not clever enough for this course

Section 1 was massive compared to section 2

it was nothing like past papers, what was all that associates about ? ?
feel so down

I couldnt balance my balance sheet and couldnt work out the shares at all

didnt have time to spend on it so had to press on and leave it like that

the cashflow wasnt too bad and the reconcilliation but dont think I have passed0 -

I agree with Smiler having done all four past papers last night I went in feeling pretty confident. I felt all was going well untill it came to 'STRGL' which I have now learnt as 'Statement of Total Recognised Gains and Losses'

Before when seeing STRGL on this forum i thought it must be for another subject.... how wrong could i be!!

Then came Sharholders Movements and i thought what the??

I much prefer the past papers which it too think were more simple and flowing. I just wish that i wasnt that ill around November time therefore could attend lessons and would have passed the Dec 04 paper instead of having to take this one again and now it looks like i will be taking it AGAIN in Dec 05

Fingers crossed the pass percentage isnt that high! If anyone knows the pass mark could hey let us know? Ta

0 -

I agree - cash flow was ok, but that was all. All the papers seem longer and harder this year! 20% of our class walked out after the first half hour! Shareholders accounts? Shares etc I agree - we have not done anything like these questions, and were told nothing about associates in our college course.

If you work hard and do past papers and questions, you should be able to do the papers. So why cant we.0 -

im so glad im not the only one that found it horrible was speaking to my swotting big bro that passed everything last year 1st time n he said that if every1 was stuck on gains n losses and the other 1 the aat wont b too hard on us
i just hope hes right or im screwed0 -

i put about statements providing info on fin performace & position, useful to users to assess stewardship and for making economic decisions and then that Mr scratchy or whatever he was called, can't recall now, was a potential investor who used ratio analysis to decide whether to invest or not.0 -

<< oh no - I put something about it was for the users of accounts, the stewardship of the entity and all that, true and fair etc etc. >>

Exactly right. FRS18 says "The objective of financial statements is to provide information about the reporting entityâ??s financial performance and financial position that is useful to a wide range of users for assessing the stewardship of the entityâ??s management and for making economic decisions." so you were pretty much spot on.

<< feel so down >>

Don't panic. I felt exactly like that after the Intermediate Costing exam. Had huge problems with one question, then found out afterwards that I'd missed one entire question because I hadn't turned over the last page. I was utterly conviced I'd failed and was astonished when the results came through and I'd passed.
0 -

Can you guys reserve a desk for the Dec 05 exam for me too please. I know I screwed up the written tasks, although I made my cash flow balance

Now the longgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg wait till August. I heard in most other countries they get results back on any exams they take the next day!!!!!! (these are not necessarily accounting exams) bit still, Its stupid we have to wait long, its TORTURE!!!! 0 -

I put the same as Dawn says she did

feel so annoyed, I have been practising journals, consolidations etc as we were told they were always in

no point in worrying about it now I suppose but I will be interested to see the answer paper and the chief assesor's comments. it really annoys me when they say the weaker candidates did so and so.. but we are not weak, just badly taught in my opinion. Its not as if we havent put the work in. I have never worked so hard. I feel like writing to them !

Thanks for the encouragement Bytebrother it helps a lot. I feel a bit better now.0 -

I know I'm at risk of getting lynched here, as a tutor on the forum, but here goes...

There are lessons to be learned here. First and foremost, just memorising the past papers is not enough! The AAT will NEVER just set identical papers - do that and they may as well just give the qualification away with each day's copy of The Sun.

Remember that these exams are supposed to test your UNDERSTANDING. The past papers are a good starting point, and doing them again and again is a good thing. However, you must make sure that as you go through them for the 75th time, you change your approach. Instead of speeding up because you remember the answers, slow down. Think about the whys and wherefores of each task. Ask yourself to justify and explain each answer. Think about how the question could be changed, and how you would answer the changed version. If you can't answer that, hit the books and develop your understanding.

Take the STRGL, for example. This hasn't appeared in the last few papers, but it is in the syllabus, AND the books. It is also mentioned in the examiner's guidance, which is available to all on this very website.

Please don't anyone take offence at this. I'm not having a go, and I don't think any of you are "thick" - you've got this far, haven't you? I'm just trying to suggest that there are ways in which you can help yourselves, so that even if you are disappointed in August, you should be better equipped for December.

Best of luck to you all,

Andrew Harrington0
