Ok Chris, will keep you in mind!!!! Do you fancy commuting to Northamptonshire every day then??? Anyhow, if you hate the job so much why are you studying accounts???

Tracy

ps you've made me feel really old describing yourself as young and energetic!0 -

Hi Trace. Sorry didnt reply sooner was in a meeting. Anyway yeah i mainly do bookkeeping and VAT but they have started to introduce me to payroll. Been here just over a year and hated every minute of it lo. Suprised how long ive stayed here. Only started the job because i failed my a levels big time and didnt have any other option at the time, so ended up here. Let me know if you start your business, ill come and work for you!!! Hi all.

Thought I would just say hello also from work. I have a look on this forum quite a few times everyday while at work as well.

Lou0 -

Hi Tracy

Story sounds similar. Wish I had studied at an earlier age instead of leaving it till I was in my 30's. Mind you better late than never, and probably wouldn't have given it so much effort when I was younger. Although like you say nobody seems to want you at our age in trainee roles.

Jacy0 -
Hmmm
That will be a big step, what does it mean you will have to do to start your own business?
0 -

Hi Chris

I do everything from entering the accounts onto the system, to typing up the financial statements for companies house, I also do the VAT, complete the year ends and the payroll, amongst lots of other crappy little jobs!! You're lucky working for an accountants though, wish I'd decided to use my brain when I was younger and had the time to study and work, instead of leaving it until now when I'm in my (early) 30's have 3 children and nobody is going to want to take me on as a trainee accountant!!! Thinking of starting my own book-keeping company though, been offered premises just need to see if I dare take the plunge!!

What exactly do you do??

Tracy0 -
Hmmm
I work in an Accountancy in London. Its ok i guess just long hours and the boss is pretty demanding. But they have been good in paying for exams and everything. Do you do their bookkeeping or VAT or something Trace?

Chris.0 -

Hi All,

I've come into accounting at a late age too.......33. I've been finding it difficult to get my first position in accounting. I've not got enough experience for working at a decent pay packet, and haven't been able to get any interviews for trainee positons........bloody annoying. So I'm looking into auditing at the moment - then will look at the possibility of private book keeping.

What you all think - should I give it a go?

Mark.0 -
Hmmm
Hi Mark

I would definately give it a go, the only thing holding me back at the moment is the fact that my youngest is only 2, he is currently looked after by my mum in the mornings whilst I work, and the other 2 are at school. I don't want to push him out all day, so I cannot commit any more hours to work, but I don't intend working for anyone else for too much longer, and like yourself would like to also learn auditing.

I'm still in 2 minds about starting up on my own now though, and think I should wait until I have completed AAT, then I will know I can do what I said I can, the qualification will back up my experience, and Josh (my 2 year old) will be in school.

I suppose (without sounding sexist) you're lucky that you don't need to think like this, and can more than likely start working full-time straight away. All I can say is good luck, I hope it all works out well for you!!!!

Let us know if you do manage it, and I will keep you posted to my decision once I have had a chance to analyse it further!

Take care

Tracy0
