I have just completed my Technician exams and would like to become self employed- but have no idea where to start. The only exposure to manual accounts is in class, never in a real situation.

Is there a course, or a seminar I can go to, to give me practical help on how to start. I am nervous to start without this knowledge, as I don;t want a boxful of paperwork appear on my lounge floor, and I don't have the first idea where to start.

Thanks in anticipation

What about Excel? Put numbers from paper on floor onto Excel - sort into date order and and analyse - hey presto - a set of meaningful figures!
Does anyone still use manual accounting process? I too have just finished technician (just project and cash management left) I took the course for the qualification but mostly to understand the basics and to know what the computer does with the figures you input.
I work part-time in a small office and also self-employed "doing books" at home. I use Sage Instant and Line 50 for both. I have been doing tax returns for the past 2 years and find it really easy once you get past the red tape and the inland revenue helpline is excellent, even phoned them for advice when i did my PTC.
My advice is to invest in a sage package, instant is cheapest, fairly easy to learn, i taught myself so anyone can do it. You can use it for multiple companies, just save each one to disc and restore them as you use them.

I don't know of any courses you could join but maybe your local job centre could advise.

Good luck anyway
Sue
