Whispers of the pass marks being reduced???

Somone on my course equired of the pass rate and got the below reply from the AAT

Percentage pass marks are not allocated to AAT examinations as the mark will be completely different between different sittings and between different sections of the same paper, however, the standard looked for is very high. AAT examinations are competence based assessments and are quite different in character from a traditional examination. In a conventional examination you may have a pass mark of 40%, the percentage required to gain competence in an AAT exam can be as high as 70%. The percentage is intentionally high as the standard for competence is set in terms of acceptability in the workplace, therefore, it should be appreciated that an employer would not be satisfied with an employee who was only 40% capable of doing their job.

Hope this helps
Do you mean that is 70% for both sections or one section?

I believe the overall paper pass mark is 70%, the sections though are marked on the difficulty of the questions, therefore if you got most the the questions right in section 1 but they were not regarded @ that difficult then it wouldn't gain as many marks compared to if you got more right in section 2 and visa versa.

I have heard talk though that because of the feed back of how the exams went and people weren't happy, they may drop the pass mark anyway, it depends on how students generally did, if we all didn't do as well as expected then they would drop the pass mark so to make sure that a constant percentage pass each year.

The AAT sais that this doesn't happen but the tutors @ my college said this is pretty much what happens altough they would never admit to it.

    Hi.

The AAT want to pass competent students, and have a respected qualification. If they decide the pass rate is 70%, they may look again at papers with 68 or 69% to doublecheck, but they're not going to pass everybody.

There's a lot of talk on these forums that with the exams being 'hard' and people 'complaining' the AAT will lower the pass mark!

There was nothing in the exam papers that wasn't on the syllabus, which is freely available under 'Assessments', 'Exam Support'.

Students are obviously nervous, and want to see their hard work, commitment & sacrifices pay off, but there is a danger we'll start 'clutching at straws'.

It's time to relax and put the exams behind you.

Scott.

It is fundamental to the worth of the qualification that competence remains at a constant standard, and anyway why would a competence-based qualification 'reduce' the level of competence requried some years? Doesn't make sense.

These aren't A-levels you know (the latter are getting easier all the time).
