Personally, I think it IS harder to get a job in acountancy/finance without any prior experience. However, try not to be too deterred from applying for jobs - especially trainee auditor positions. The very fact you have the AAT qualification speaks volumes in itself and will greatly benefit you in your first job, giving you exellent grounding (and exemptions) for ongoing study.

If you are failing to get a job through 'lack of work experience' keep trying - something will turn up eventually.

0 -

I can understand from an employers point of view taking on someone without experience even though they have the AAT qualification. I am an employer and a student of AAT. Personally I find that a lot of the work carried out in my studies do not enter into my job. Likewise, a lot of work I do in my job I haven't studied.

As an employer, with the above in mind, sometimes experience of working is as effective as the qualification. My advice to you would be to send your CV to as many employers that you know asking them to consider you for voluntary work. You may offer 1 or 2 days a week. If you are able to do this it will provide you with the necessary experience required to progress into full time accounting employment.

You may get many rejections but there is always the possibility that a small firm or a charity that is under staffed would love to have someone work for free. Give it a try, you've got nothing to lose.

0 -

Not that it helps you, but i have only just taken imtermediate level and am starting technician, but have worked in accounts for 20+ years. When i apply for jobs i am marked as 'qualified accountant by experience' and have a pick of jobs available to me, bookkeeper through to assistance accountant etc etc

The only reason i am going for the qualification now, is that i want to start working for myself, so having the qualification sometime can help reassure people that i know what i am talking about. Plus i dont want to be the 'assistant' any more, i want to be the top accountant for the firm!!

Depending on your age, it alwasy a good idea to get your foot in the door of a firm even at one of the lower levels, you will soon prove yourself and should progress very quickly, as you already have technician qualification under your belt. Obviously as you get older, you dont want to start of on a low level so i would imagine it gets harder to find a job.

Not sure if any of that above helps at all, but keep trying, apply for all you can, some company, especially maybe a smaller one will need your skill, you just have to sell it to them
0 -

I know what you mean I've been searching for a job in accountancy for ages, that is one that doesn't require experience. I went to the website addresses that were advertised in the accounting technician magazine the AAT send out and sent emails to the recuitment agencies. I now feel I am finally beginning to have some success and will hopefully be gaining that much needed experience soon.
0
