Anyone moving on to ATT?

Hello!

Since I really enjoyed studying PTC and BTC, I've just decided to study ATT. I used to do Payroll Administration and expatriate staff Tax Return, so I have worked with Tax Accountants.

As vast majority of AAT students move on to ACCA or CIMA, I'm just wondering if there are anyone out there going to ATT, as I have never met an ATT student.

What worries me is that my ACCA qualified friend warns me that ATT is horrendously difficult and there's a huge drop out rate. Unfortunately, I've lost contact with Tax Accountants I used to work with (they both changed jobs). I still want to try it anyway, but I appreciate if I can get to know anyone who's studying ATT.

Thanks! YOKO

Anyone moving on to ATT?
Not doing this personally as I never did either of the tax units. A girl at our Accountant's office is doing the course though and she is loving it. Another AAT student by the name of Riaz Shahid is also planning to start this route and I'm sure she would welcome some support from another student in the same situation. I will try and contact her for you.

0 -

I am also considering doing ATT (how confusing can it get just on the initials alone!) - i would also appreciate any views on the difficulty of doing it, also i feel rather exam-ed out now, but doing quite a lot of business and personal tax so should be a good idea.....0 -

Hi,

I am planning to start the ATT in September and to take the exams in May including the law paper.
Does anyone know of any good course providers in London or Surrey? I could only find the London Metropolitian university offering courses.
0 -

I have just joined the ATT (membership lasts for 3 years) and have sent off for BPP core material for the tax exams. I am intending to take the exam in May 06 as well. My local college was going to run an evening course but due to goverment cut backs, thats been scrapped!

I am not doing the law section at the moment. If you have full AAT passes you are exempt from the law and accounting papers. I think if you go onto Chartered tax then you might need it. i believe you have to be an ATT member for 10 months before you can take exams, so if you are thinking of May 06 you need to get sorted now. You can claim exemption later, no need to wait for AAT results.

Any study help would be appreciated!

0 -

thanks for that. I think I will leave the law paper for another time and just concentrate on the 2 tax papers.

Have you heard how difficult the exams are?
0 -

Hello!

Great to see other student thinking of doing ATT. My ACCA friend was telling me about her 'bright' friend gave up ATT, but I suppose there's no harm in trying. When I went to FTC to discuss ATT course at 'Life after AAT' seminar (I was the only one who wanted to talk to ATT guy...!), he said I need to study 10 hours a week to keep up with the course. Say good-bye to my weekends, then.

BTW, I'm in this Catch 22 situation. You need to be working as a Tax accountant for 3 years to be an ATT member, but I can't get a tax job unless I'm studying ATT or qualified ATT. I'm tempted to study ATT anyway, hoping to find a taxation job during my study. Horrifying thing is I won't be an ATT member until 2010 (provided I pass my exam first time).

Anyway, good luck, darlings. YOKO

PS: In case you are wondering, Nada Surf is my favourite band from New York. Their album, 'Let Go' is brilliant!!0 -
Anyone moving on to ATT?
hi,
I am in a similar position at the moment. I only do a little book-keeping and have another business that is nothing to do with tax.
I plan to start the ATT and look for a part time position in an accountany practice. I know the money will be bad but that's why i need to keep my other business.
If the ATT requires 10 hours a week thats what i was doing with the aat including the time I was at college.
The ATT only requires 2 years experience and then you you can be a member but if you pass the exams and don't have the experience then you can be an affiliate.
Any suggestions on finding part time work in tax?0 -

Thanks, Phil, for letting me know of 'Affilliate' status.

I have seen this charity scheme leaflet at my local library. They set up a help desk at a library or town hall once a month and give free tax advice to low-income pensioners. They probably won't pay for your service, but it could be a good experience.

YOKO x0
