Hi, there.

I know it sounds strange, but do you call yourself an Accountant? Every time people ask me what I do for a living, I just say I work at accounts department.

Most people don't know what Accounting Technician is, but I'm not a Chartered Accountant. When I become an AAT member, I might start calling myself a 'trainee Accountant, not Chartered yet'.

YOKO

    Hi

I've completed AAT and about to start ACCA/CIMA and my job title is accountant. In the uk the term can be used by anyone, regardless of experience or qualification.

As for what constitutes part-qualified, again, there is no definitive answer, afterall part-qualified means having part (i.e. not all) of a qualification!

Neil

I thought part qualified was after completion of part 2 ACCA. If you start ACCA with AAT Tech you start at part 2.

Helen

I used to say 'Accounts Assistant' but now I have a v. complex job in an Investment Company which I don't even try to explain! I just say ' I work for an Investment Company' and watch people's eyes glaze over.
According to our phone list, I'm an Accounts Trainee, which is what I usually say.

If people ask in more detail, I say I'm doing AAT which is a step below Chartered. That satisfies most people!

I just call myself a qualified accounting technician or an accounts assistant.

I guess I could at a stretch call myself a part qualified accountant!

I would never describe myself as an accountant as I don't have enough experience to handle the amount of tax related questions that come your way when you admit you deal with accounts!!!

Annette

Of course â?? I suppose anyone could call themselves whatever they like â?? itâ??s whether it is recognised by anyone other than yourselfâ?¦.

Your views are taken on board but surely if one is calling themselves a â??part qualifiedâ?? accountant, others may take the view and get the impression that you are part qualified as an accountant rather than being qualified as an Accounting Technician (I am trying to be very careful in not upsetting AAT students and members here) since AAT is an â??Accounting Technicianâ?? , which is not a qualification giving an accountant status.

Also - with your comments regarding â??what constitutes part-qualifiedâ?? you say that there is no definitive answer, and that part qualified means having part (an not all) of a qualification, but surely AAT is a full qualification in its own right. Once you have completed it you no longer have to studying or taken more exams (leaving CPD out for the moment), therefore this is a full qualification. To further you knowledge you can consider other option (further studies) such as ACCA, ICAEW, and CIPFAâ?¦.and so on, which are professional exams to reach an â??Accountantâ?? status.

Hope nobody is offended by my views I am just giving another perspective on the issue in question!
Hi

Going on from what you 'Bowlingbazza' said about the AAT beign a full-qualification, yes it is but people here are discussing what gives some part-qualified accountant status, 'Accountant' being something that AAT has been said not to be.

Neil

Yeah sorry Neil â?? I was going off the point a little.

On deciding whether to start AAT I had an interview with my local college, who rightly informed me that the AAT qualification was not a qualification that would give me qualified accountant status, but would give assurance to employersâ?? and such like that I had the relevant skills and knowledge to be able to give quality support. It appears to me from reading various threads related to this topic that this may not always be the case. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that college are in receipt of government funding if AAT students are enrolled, and therefore leaving it up to the individual to read between the lines..

Iâ??m sure if anyone were to approach the AAT with the question of status they would clearly state that students, members, and FMAAT that complete the entire course cannot class themselves as qualified accountantsâ?¦..
I agree with what has been said regarding not being a 'qualified accountant' upon completion of the AAT.

However, if you then go on to CIMA/ACCA the AAT qualification gives you exemptions (You get even more I think if you have an accounts degree as well).

So does this, by default, mean you actually can call yourself 'part-qualified' if you go on to do one of these see as you don't have to start at the beginning ???

    Hi

Going on from what Bowlingbazza said, as I understand it the AAT are quite cautious about the issue, not wanting to offend the supporting bodies etc. However, I have seen AAT articles etc, that refer to 'AAT accountants'. Also, the latest edition of 'Accounting Technician' has an article on a lady taking the AAT. On the cover it says she is training to be an accountant.

Neil
