Fixed Asset Register
Can't help with Sage as I've never used it. We have a different register for different types of equipment. Computer equipment has it's own for example. I have a column for date of purchase,Item detail (eg Ergo laptop), serial number, location within the company or person assigned to, value, depreciation charge, accum dep, and disposal. For laptops, mobiles and other equipment that can be taken off site, I have an equipment register with items either signed out on a daily basis, or permantly signed off site for items which are taken home every day.

Don't know if this is what you are looking for, hope someone else can help you on the software side.0 -
Fixed Asset Register
Thank you Jackie that is what I needed, something to get my brain working in the right direction.
The software side is not a problem as we have the sage consultant coming in who can do all that, I just has to have some ideas to begin with!0 -
Fixed Asset Register
This sounds like an ideal project for Excel, using formulae to automatically calculate depreciation and a different sheet for each category of assets. I remember completing a fixed asset register task for the intermediate simulation and during my feedback I was asked how the register could be improved. The only thing I could think of was perhaps a column to show total depreciation to date for each asset and then total for category - this seemed to be the answer which they were looking for so may be something worth thinking of.

The beauty of this scenario is that you can set up a basic register and then adapt and modify to suit your needs as you go along which will go a long way to impress.

I know that Excel will integrate with Sage okay and your consultant will be able to help in this area. Good luck with everything.0 -

Hi Rebecca,
I'm a fixed asset guru with 28 years under my belt. I've worked manual systems and 5 different types of computer software systems. Firstly to design it, you need to realise what type of workplace you are in. Do you work with cost centres? As this is what you can use for asset location as well as charging depreciation.
You need to have make, model and serial numbers of all types of equipment, especially that which is mobile!
Also, you need the different rates of depreciation for all categories of assets.
columns are usually, cost centre/asset account, description, location, Asset cost, cumulative depreciation, monthly charge, ytd charge, net book value, no of months depreciated, date depreciation started.
If you have this info, you should have no problem. Oh, and if you constantly work with the idea of remaining months depreciation, then if you change policy or merge with another company and the year end happens to be at a different time of the year, then you will have no problem adjusting.
Hope this helps?0 -

That would be great, Paul, thank you
rwilliams21@hotmail.com

Thanks everyone, you have all been a great help.

I have just learnt a valuable lesson : Don't just learn for exams as you may will need to use the knowledge at a later date, after all that is the point of the AAT qualification!!0
