I have just completed the intermediate level. Does anybody have any advice on which options to take? I was going to do the core units and the 2 skills tests as options. Would it then be possible to do all 3 exams in December? Is this too big a workload? I would appreciate if anybody who is studying or has studied technician level could give me any feedback on what they have done.

Thanks.

    Hi

I prefer exams so took the two taxation options as modules. Found them not too bad as they start from scratch and personal tax especially is relevant to everyday life (income tax, benefits in kind that sort of thing). I did these two modules plus DFS as home study in about 6 months.

It all depends on what you plan to go on and do and where your interests lie. I hate auditing so knew I wouldn't get on too well with that module.

Best of luck whatever you choose.

I would say its not impossible to take on the three core units (exams) in December. PCR and PEV run into each other but DFS is definitely the harder subject I think. I did PCR and DFS from January to June along with auditing as an option (I'd already done cash management) and passed everything very much to my surprise!

I found auditing very boring!

What do you do in your job? Do you do anything that relates to DFS? My only concern for you would be the workload for DFS. It would mean a LOT of studying at home!

Besides if you enter all the exams and then find you aren't ready you won't be penalised for not sitting them. You just won't get your exam fees back.

Good luck for your technician year and whatever subjects you choose!

Hi i am due to start technician in september.

The options i have chosen are the Tax options as this relates to my job, we were revised by our college to ask our employers which units they would recommended and that would help us in our jobs.

Hope this helps

Thanks Nicky & Sadie for your help. The problem in my job is that I work in sales ledger/credit control so don't really deal with proper accounts issues. I will take on more bookeeping etc. as I progress through the course and will probably go on to do CIMA. I've heard that BTC is quite hard and there is no point doing it now because I will still have to do it for CIMA anyway. I think I will definitely do CMCC but now I'm not sure about the other option to choose. Would it be best to do DFS on its own after christmas hopefully once I've done the other exams?

I agree that DFS is a huge subject. If you don't work with P&L's, balance sheets, journals etc. on a day to day basis then I'd suggest you do this unit on its own. It needs a lot of work. The best way to tackle it is to do every single question you can find in the textbook and all the past exam papers. Technique in this subject will get you a long way.

Business tax starts from scratch so does not assume any prior knowledge of the area. Its quite logical but again I'd reiterate the same as for DFS. You'll need to do lots and lots of practice questions so that the techniques sink in.

Best of luck :-)

The term time after Christmas is longer than from Sept to Dec so it might be advisable to do DFS then. And PCR and PEV run into each other to some extent so maybe do them together. I did PCR in June and there was a question on sampling which I was told was covered in PEV. Therefore everyone apart from me knew the answer as I hadn't done PEV and they had?!

I haven't done Business Tax so I can't tell you about that but I am hoping to do Personal Tax in September as an extra subject just because it really interests me.

Cash Management was pretty easy. I did the simulation without having any lessons and if you work in that side of accounts you shouldn't find it too hard. I always fancied doing auditing too but when it cam to it I found it very boring! Each to their own though, you might love it.
