The accountant where I work comes in once a year to finish off the year end accounts (which take him a year anyway) and then all he does is moan about things that have or havenot been done by yours truly. I don't see him at any other time, he never tells me how he would like things to be done, or anything changed to make life easier for both of us. Can anyone give me any advice on what to do. My heart says get out because I have had enough of his moaning, but I would like to stay to prove a point.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Helen

I guess you can't hit him ??

On a serious note, are you left to your own devices throughout the year or is there anyone else who could back you up.

Do you have a HR department that could lodge a complaint against him ??

    Hi Nicky

No theres no one else in the accounts department apart from myself. We have no HR department apart from the MD who doesn't appear to care about anyone . So apart from having a good moan to all you lovely AAT people and my poor husband I really don't know who to turn to.

Helen

P.S. I thin the joke about the accountants is spot on my obviously had a sense of humour transplant at birth!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi

When you say compnay accountant, do you mean an employee of the company but (for example) from say head office, or the guy the company pays to company from a firm?

If it is the latter, he needs to take a refresh in 'being polite to your clients'!

Neil

    Hi Neil

yes this person is an outside accountant who we pay to do our year end figures. salthough they take him nearly a year to do, but them we are an all manual office, although that shouldn't matter this much. He even seems to think m y doing the AAt qualification is a bit of a joke, and when I told him I was going on a CPD course this weekend on Money lLaundering and Forensic accounting he looked at me, smirked and said perhaps you can teach e all about it then. I nearly threw the coffee I had made for him at him. I know I shouldn't let him wind me up and get to me like this but I have worked so hard to try and sort the chaos in the accounts out and everytime I think I have got somewhere I get this sort of reaction.

Thenks for listening to my ramblings

Helen

    Hi,

I can't believe your external accountants behave like this!! I work in practice as a Senior and if any members of staff from our practice went to client's and treated them like you get treated we would be in for a serious disciplinary!

I would contact your Accountants office direct and complain about him because he has got serious attitude problems which are not warranted to a client. Your company pays his wages!! Presumably he is not a sole trader, so if not, I would ring a partner of his firm and suggest they send him on a customer service course. The other explanation is that he is one of those ex-students who couldn't pass his exams, got time barred and then is envious of all those who are studying!

Hi

Id try being as rude and arrogant to him. You dont have to be offensive, just come back with one word answers, or just a 'yes' or 'no', pay him no attention unles you have to. Also, start questioning him, if he comes back with a remak or quip mike light of his comment. Also, perhaps start smerking at him, perhaps making light of his role. As for throwing the coffe over him, dont make him one in the first place and then if he asks, tell him where the kitchen is.

Neil

    Hi Steve

Unfortunately the accountant is a one man band of himself and his receptionist/clerk. Otherwise I would say something, but unfortunately theres only him to compalin to. I am dreading going to work tomorrow because he wanted to speak to the MD when I left this afternoon about the accounts.

I will just have to wait and see what if anything is said. All I can do is keep looking for another job and hope when he retires next year he dicides to stop doing our accounts for us.

Thanks for the advice anyway
Helen

    Hi

Seems that because he's on his own, he has no one to keep him in shape and has probably become a bit out of touch with modern practice.

What a horrible man!

Neil

One thing you could ask him/your boss for is a copy of the letter of engagement which he should have sent to your company in order for him to act for you. This is now a formal requirement of Practice accountants. In that letter there will be a complaints procedure and in it should either be the name of another accountancy firm he has nominated in order to manage complaints or the alternative would be to complain about his actions to his institute. If he is a member of a professional institute (for example ACCA, ICAEW) he has a legal obligation to show courtesy and act in a professional manner at all times. As is the case with your accountant, these obligations are clearly not being met and as such he will be in breach of his institute's rules. Maybe you could have a word with your boss and explain your grievances to him. The only downside to this is that he won't be professionally qualified and as such not a member of an institute, but that is a rareity these days. Have you ever noticed any letters after his name? Professional ones of course!!!
