I have just completed my technician level, but still now i haven't got a job. i have been looking for a job since i got my foundation certificate in 2004. I have sent many application letters, plus my certificates to many companies , but still now i haven't get a good reply from them. Employers were just not interested, because i have no experience. I still have the hope that if given a chance i will show what i can do. I don't know what to do now, whether to give up or not??.,

It;s my standard reply I'm afraid, but one that worked for me. Have you tried getting voluntary work i.e. treasurer for a local club or association. They are always crying out for accounts people to do their books. If you try PTA's or playgroups, it would only be a couple of hours a week, probably in the evening, which wouldn't interrupt your job hunting.

Not only does it give you a little experience but it always looks good on a CV.

Good luck0 -

There is a website about organisations looking for volunteers http://www.do-it.org.uk then all you do is type in your postcode and when you are available and (i think) type of work you want and it will tell all the local ones to you.0 -
thanks
I am glad to read your suggestion, well the site was good. i have found out a lot of information about getting a job., thanks0 -

I have just finished intermediate level, and due to start technician in September, I was also having problems trying to find a job within an accountants without having any previous experience. They recognised I was doing the right thing by doing the course, but would not give me a change. To this outcome, I changed my approach, and asked about doing work experience. I was taken on to do three months experience, and have since been offered a permanent position.

Hope it works out for you :-)0 -

You haven't done 3-4 years hard study just to give up at the first hurdle.
Try phoning every accountant in your local yellow pages to start, you may have missed one!
Try the job centre plus site and try the local agencies, you may find that several of the agency jobs may be temporary but that is a good start point. Some agency work also leads to permanent work.

Good luck with the CONTINUING JOB HUNTING.

Regards,
Paula
fairygodparent@hotmail.co.uk0 -

Hi,
I was recently in exactly the same position as yourself, however i looked at agencies and found a really good friendly one in preston called RK Accountancy, they were so helpful and supportive. I got some temp work and then was taken on full time! Check them out at www.rkgroup.co.uk and follow the accountancy link or give them a call, number is 01772 881666.
Best of luck
James0 -

Its hard but with no experience you still have to start at the bottom of the ladder I'm afraid. Some employers are put off employing a qualified technician because the salary for a technician (with experience) is higher than for someone with no experience even with the qualifications. Even one years experience will help you so you need to try anything you can to get on the bottom of the ladder.

Try agencies, voluntary work of give the larger companies a try - you may have to start with either purchase ledger or sales ledger but this will help you on your way.

Other places to start are the local police they usually have a lot of jobs that don't often get advertised outside of the force. You can get their tel from directory enquiries and ask to speak to the personnel department. Also local councils are the same.

Try voluntary work at a local accountants. The big firms are usually happy for the extra help also if they are a big firm they usually take on staff each year especially if you are willing to continue your study (this makes you cheaper to employ).

Another solution is to send your CV to local companies saying you are freelance. Scoot around your employment history by putting the company names but no a description of the type of work you did. They will assume this is all accounts based. You may get as odd day of work here or there but if you are a proven entity to them then it will look better if you are known to them.

It is really hard but you just have to keep at it. Don't bring up the situation of no previous experience. Often if you add a list of subjects to your CV that you can do then this will get you through the door.

If you need help with this let me know and I will send you a sample of my CV - this may also be a problem in itself. If the CV isn't good then you don't even get a response. I have only had 3 years experience and for the last two years I have been working as the financial controller for an IT company. It's all about getting through the door. My email is jacobie@tiscali.co.uk.

Good luck!0 -

Dear Mich011,
As you said that you changed your approach, and asked about doing work experience and was taken on to do three months experience.
Did you send your CV to the accountancy practise and ask working as a volunteer or as a trainee? Were most of the practise that you tried happy to provide your a chance to gain work experience?
Thanks a lot
Bianna0
