Hi everyone

Could anyone please give me some advice and guidance on which options they think are best to take as I've had conflicting information from my boss, friends and my college! I've been told Auditing is a bit useless unless you work in practice, is this true? I've also been told Personal Tax is very useful by my boss then told its not very useful by my college as the laws change every year. So I don't know what to do!
Also, I'd like to know how these options I take now will affect what I go on to do after, i.e. CIMA, ACCA etc.
One last question (or two!) - does taking ACCA give you a lot more options job wise than CIMA and would I definitely have to be working in a practice to take ACCA?

Very grateful for any advice given!!

I took personal tax and cash man as my options (cash man is a very straightforward unit and a devolved). I enjoyed personal tax as you can relate to it well and is very useful for checking your payslip and tax code!!

If you complete Tech level you exempt from part one of ACCA regardless of the units taken. I think with CIMA it's a bit different - top up units to gain exemption from certain units. Check the CIMA website for more info as I'm not fully sure. (I'm starting ACCA in Jan).

You don't have to work in practice to do ACCA but I think with CIMA it's best to be in industry.

I personally think ACCA opens up more doors than CIMA as you can't do Audits unless you're ACCA.

Helen

I went and had a chat with some kind tutors at one of the BPP offices before I made any decisions, (my work didn't know what to suggest!)

The tutors suggested for me and my circumstances of not working within an accounting environment that unit 15 Cash management & Unit 17 Auditing were the best for me.

both are devolved assessments (no exams!) and it would not be worth taking a taxation unit unless I was certain to continue onto futher qualifications like CIMA/ACCA but if I do continue on, taxation is studied later under one of these qualifications so therefore for me there was no point doing a taxation unit at the time.

I will also say to anyone who is contemplating the auditing unit, I found it very interesting and passed with no problems.

    Hi

I did audit and cash mangement. Found both quite usefull, even though I dont work in audit. As for futur study, either options will have there advantages and disadvantages as all the topics are covered at varying levels at some stage or another in other qualifications. Do the ones you like, you more likely to get something out of them that way.

As for which provides better oportunities (ACCA or CIMA), how long is a pice of string!!! I chose CIMA as it fits what i want to do. Its more geared towards industry than ACCA as it has more on management accounting and general business management, while still having the same content of general financial accounting as ACCA. True it doesnt cover audit, but audit is only relevant if you wich to work in practice. If you do ACCA and want to become an auditor, you will need to complete at least another 2 years in an approved practice after gaining your ACCA qualification in order to qualify as an auditor. Contra to popular beief CIMA qualifieds can work in practice and prepare accounts.

If recruitment consultants are anything to go by (!?!?!), they tell me that CIMA is preffered in industry, but that can depend on your area of the country.

Neil

Once you've become a MAAT, how long does it take to complete either CIMA or ACCA qualification?

Talking about ACCA, If you finish aat level 3 and 4 at new standards, you will get foundation exemption and its all up to you how quick you can do. I have finished 3 and 4 of aat and got exemption from foundation. I am planning to finish within year and half. Doing 3 papers at a go.

any one doing ACCA after AAT, Please, please, please do take business tax as your option and it will help you do 2.3. Most of the thing are repeated. you will pass 2.3 easily.

Arjun
