Hi

you are definately being underpaid. I have just become AAT qualified and earn 17k which I don't think is enough I live in the South adn I should be earning from 18k to 22k. HAYS Accountancy Personel website has a salary guide for each area in the UK and is a good place to start.

Thing is, I was told this week that although the salary guide gives figures, in general employers don't like to offer you much more than 2-3k from your previous salary.

I got a new job with Hays this week, and the company were offering mid-late teens. They offered me 15 as I am now on 12.5, and I asked the agency if this was becuase they didn't think I was worth 18, and could I be cheeky and ask for 18 but agency said no, what they offered was in comparison to what I earned and not what I'm worth if you know what I mean.

Not sure whether the agency were just trying to make me feel better though.
Hi

I think the salary scales are all out of proportion it seems to me that bosses make their own rules on this. It depends on where you are in the county and your age and dare I say it your sex. With the exception of a few most bosses do relate back to your previous pay I am now 33 yrs but when I was 18yrs trying to go from £8k upwards seemed like a neverending battle. I think however, if you are qualified AAT or have taken on some significant course such as this, it should be reflected in your pay. So ask for more, they may ask why you think you are worth this amount and you may be able to list things that you do or could possible get involved with being that you are more skilled then before. Look at this way nothing venturered nothing gained. I must hasten to say I live in the south and am on £20k now, which I feel is about middle of the road for my abilities and have two exams to go to be completed on AAT. Then who knows...the battle of CIMA versus ACCA awaits me.

Regards

Marie

    Hi

The problem with salary surveys is they dont actually give a clear indication of anything other than qualifcation or jobe role. Experience (both relevant and non-relevant experience), age and work load will all affect the pay.

As for the issue of employers basing there offer on your current salary, I'd say the reason for this is that they use the salary as a gauge of your current abilities.

hsodhih, you dont say how old you are or how much accounting or other relvant experience you have, all of these factors will affect your salary. Also making a move from indsutry to practice, means learning new things and as such may mean starting off a little lower than someone already in a similar role who had always done that role.

If it is any help, moving around from job to job (not too often!) does help push up your salary. Ive been in accounts for 4 years and have managed to notch on an average of £1875 per year, and hopefully a little more very soon...

Neil
