Hello all,

firstly i am starting AAT foundation level this evening at college, 6 hours a week spread over 2 evenings and i cant wait, i am really excited but here is a little insight about me so far, and feedback will be appreciated as i am kind of apprehensive about starting this course and also very excited at the prospect of gaining a qualification in accountancy.

My name is Andrew and am currently working in central London for my fathers business, i do all the bookeeping and accounts, my duties include:

Inputting sales invoices
Inputting purchase invoices
Sales receipts
Purchase payments
Direct debits input
Sending out customer statements monthly
Petty cash entries
Reconcile of bank statement monthly
Payroll on monthly basis
VAT returns (quarterly obviously)

i think that pretty much summerises all that i do, i have been doing this for 3 years and going on 4 now but have not had any accounting qualification. At first i had a qualified accountant teaching me for the first few months but since then i have been doing it on my own, we have contact with an accountancy firm but nothing on a regluar basis to be honest. i beleive i am efficient in my work and do enjoy it, however i feel i need to have a qualification in order to further my wage potential in the future, i ideally like the management accounts side to it but knowledge of it is not overwhelming at all. i only have a GCSE of C in maths, that at least gives me a little starting point.

I just last night have enrolled onto the AAT accounting foundation course starting on the 12th, and am looking forward to it in a big way. i have read a few of your other messages and agree that it can get pretty tedius just inputting data at times. what i am really asking you is, doing this AAT course, is it worthwhile? is it a recognised accounting qualification? i beleive it is but feed back will be greatly appreciated, also doing all the tasks i do at the moment, is that going to help me in the course and work in my favour on the modules set out by AAT? Also what literature would anyone recommend for my course?

As i have previously said, ANY feedback from any of you members would be greatly appreciated and all your views would be taken in by me. i deepy look forward to and anticipate your replies, thank you for taking your time out to reading this and take care for now.

Andrew
Sounds like your job role should set up you up well for studying AAT. I would say yeah it's worth doing AAT. If you ever decide to look for a new job then it will be helpful to have the qualification, plus you'll learn more stuff and might be able to do more accounts where you are.

Not sure how much you know about the further qualifications but AAT would get you exemptions if you wanted to go on and do CIMA after (this is a management accounting qualification).

Good luck with it anyway!

It sounds to me like you should go straight onto the intermediate year as the first year is mainly double entry book keeping (which you already do) and banks recs etc.

You should speak to someone at college as your experience may exempt you from the first year.

    Hi,
its right that u are already doing part of what u wuld learn at the foundation stage , but if u do not have any basic knowledge of accounting basics like debits and credits , you shuld start at the foundation stage. u will form a good foundation / base and will be able to proceed with intermediate stage easily.

aat is a wonderful course because of its practical nature. u will definitely be able to relate ur work and studies.

knowledge is essential so is the qualification. Since u have basic knowledge and have realised that u are interested in accounts, do get the qualification.

regarding books, osborne is the best.
best wishes

Thanks for all your feedback so far, its appreciated, i have started the foundation stage and am really enjoying it, i cant wait till my next lesson already(yeah i know sad maybe but hey)

i spoke to my tutor and she suggested as i have previous expereince that i should go onto the intermediate stage and skip the foundation level, and so i am going to go into the intermediate stage for a trial of 2 weeks and as long as i understand everything i will stay, so fingers crossed i will be ok.

I'm rather weary if i will be able to make the step upto intermediate so soon though to be truthful as i only got tought by a fully qualified for like the first 6 months of me starting this job, and thats nearly 4 years ago now, but hey who knows hey. thanks again all.

Andrew

    Hi All

I am currently studying Intermediate at college after passing Foundation in June.

I have worked in Accounts positions for many years, but felt that I still learnt alot more about the basics covering Foundation first. I am now finding Intermediate alot easier than those who have not covered Foundation level.

I would definately recommend doing Foundation first!

Good luck in all your studies

Sinders
