Do you think this is unreasonable - I work 9 -3pm, pick the kids up, look after the house, and come September will be going to college until 9pm at night.

I wouldn't ask to be paid for these extra hours, but does anyone think its unreasonable instead to ask for the time back (say Friday morning) to complete the homework etc?

Have you asked your employer about day release? And does your college do it?

I don't think its unreasonable to ask but then again we all have houses and kids (ok just cats for me!) to look after too so you are probably no different to many other people who choose to study.

I go to college all day Thursdays and get paid for it. I work monday-Friday 8am-7pm so can't go in an evening.

Its always worth a try asking!

Sarah.
Hi,

Unfortunately I have to do my studying on a distance learning basis, because my employer won't give me time off to study as there is no cover for me, and I can't get to an evening class in time after I finish work.

I find it extremly hard at times to work full time, study, look after the house, husband and dogs (fortunately no children yet!). I'm tired quite often (and grumpy according to the hubbie!) but I am determined to put the time in to study and I am lucky that my emplyer pays for the majority of my course costs.

You have my sympathy and I am pleased that I am not the only person like this! I think you should ask your boss, what have you got to lose. Can they live without you for a morning or an afternoon, it's not that long really and if you still get your work done surely there can't be too much of a problem?!

    Hi

You could try askig, but there response could be that since you will benefit from it the future, then why not put some of your own time into it, especially if they are paying for the course.

Time off when working in industry is a luxury, whereas in practice it is more of a given - I have to do my at weekends!

Neil

I don't think it would be unreasonable to ask, but then again employers will more than likely see it from the other aspect, and that is that your working from 9 to 3 - what ever committments you have after work are essentailly your responsibilty...

Look at your long term prospect - once you have passed everything you won't have somuch to juggle. Many people have to juggle and make the extra effort.

Regards
