I have asked ACCA that if I am involved in public practice on self employed basis as MAAT and hold members in public certificate from AAT , can I go ahead and study ACCA without it affecting my practice.

They replied, but with not much clarity.

Can anyone help?

See I want to become self employed and provide my services to the public as MAAT but want to study ACCA as well without any obstacle being placed in my practice as to I can only do limited things. But surely as MAAT I should be allowed to do anything as long as I never mention ACCA to my custoners or sign in capacity of ACCA until I am member.

ACCA / AAT
There has been a number of people asking the same question and it's something that I and a number of other people are unsure of too.

From what I believe, I don't know if it's right, you can provide services up to trial balance if studying for ACCA. try looking at the ACCA handbook to see if it explains further (on the website). I had a look but didn't understand it.

Helen
0 -
ACCA / AAT
Hi

Stick200 thousand is right, as an ACCA student you cannot do any work behond trial balance, VAT returns, managgement accounts, (in other words general accounts work), Also, you would not be able to prepare anything in your name or put your signature to anything that were to be used by a third party such as a bank or other lender.

You could go on to study ACCA, but be advised of the above as (apparently) it is the most common cause for disciplinary action. You wont be able to count self employed work experience for membershi unless it is done on a sub-contract basis from another qualified accountant/practice.

The above applies even if you dont refer to your relationship with ACCA and also applies to ACCA members and fellows. CIMA have a slightly more relaxed attitude towards self employment (though you cant refer to them unless you are a member with their practicing certificate). The CIMA syllabus (contra to popular belief) is quite similar to ACCA but less tax and only covers internal audit.

Neil
0 -
ACCA / AAT
hmmmm thats interesting i was always going to do ACCA and try and start some self employed work as soon as pos (on top of gettin gall the work experience) but after reading this thread i looked at the CIMA site and there dont seem to be any restrictions on what work you can do self employed as a student member and they require only one years practice experience to get their practicing certificate instead of 3 with the ACCA hmmm0
