Need help! I can't get started! ;-)

I've went distance learning this year with premier training, wasn't sure what to expect as I did foundation & intermediate at college. I find that premier don't really speak to you unless you speak to them? I did expect a more encouraging approach to be honest.

Anyway I've had these books for 2 months now and haven't looked at a thing! I need words of encouragement & advice on how to plan a study course! I've agreed with premier that I'll do the two management accounts papers in December with the two tax papers plus financial in June!

Anyone else in the same boat?

Hi Matt
Yes similar story here I did foundation and intermediate at college. I went back to do technician but because of the intensity of his level decided I only had the time to study for 2 exams.

I belive the idea behind self directed study is that you need to ask for assistance when you need it. I received a plan of work ect but found it quite intense after 2 weeks it seemed I was to complete the first assignment. I found this impossible because it meant studying almost half the dfs book in that period of time. So I am already behind but in saying that it is meant to be at your own pace.

I think you have to be very disiplined, plan when you are going to study and stick to it. Take it step by step looking too far ahead it becomes overwhelming, remember you don't have to move forward until you are sure you have grasped the first step.
I find by following the book slowly and working thorough the tasks you do pick what to do. What is difficult is when you are stuck you have to know what to ask and write down what you want your tutour to explain. When I did have a problem they did spend the time explaining. I eneded up a resit of the PEV and went back and restudied the subject myself and decided that I worked better at my own speed but we are all different.

your journey starts with those first few steps once you get going you will be fine.

Good luck Mirage.0 -

Hi all distance learning students!
I have managed to finish all three levels with The Financial Training Company (FTC) as distance learning but have to say it was purely thanks to my strong will and possibly ability to learn quickly and easily thanks to all my previous practise from the uni...I had no support from FTC at all in whole three and a half years, and when I needed it badly while studying for Financial Statements, they acctually made me feel like a real child with no brain and kept repeating one fact all over again althought I kept asking what I needed to know it was not wanted to be heard. It was frustrating and I nearly gave up at that point but tried to find help in some other books and internet and look, here I am. I have to admit, I was a very bad distance learning student as never had time to do any work during whole year, just studied extremely hard and intensively (talking about 5-6 hours a day, 10 hours a day weekends) 3-4 weeks before sitting exams. That worked for me but obviously it is very personal and everyone has to find their best way how to get through. It's all up to you, you are on your own so get on with it. And for people thinking about taking on distance learning, the truth is, it's very difficult, tiring and frustarting and often depressing. If you are not good at reading boring textbooks, remembering and trying all over again and again, if you haven't got determination and motivation highly above average, go to the college! You will find support and friends there. There is nothing like that waiting for you with distance learning, believe me.
Good luck to everyone!0 -

Hi Matt

I have had the same problem. I did intermediate with Premier, not alot of support from my tutor and I had to constantly chase him up to report to AAT that I had done my H&S project. I switched to FTC for Technician level - they set a timetable for the course, but found due to work and family I was unable to keep to it. I have now had to pay £30 to have my timetable changed. The only time I have had contact with my tutor is when I am in difficulty and the response is never immediate. Feedback for my MAS project was a nightmare as Philip Dunn was my tutor for that unit and he was never around due his other committments.

I am now down to my last 3 units, but I have totally lost all motivation. At a time like this I could do with some serious support. I cannot believe that my company has paid £700 for just textbooks - you'd think an e-mail to see how you are getting on would be good sometimes.

I am very grateful for the forum.

Best of luck
Eva0 -

Hi Matt,
I have started with Premier Training after I did intermediate at college. I am disappointed too. It takes ages to get assignments back and I was told never to call after 16.30 hours or 19.30 hours as they have at that time already switched off their PC's which is 30 minutes too early.
I got a list (inside the blue folder they sent out) telling me when they want the short test and Practice exams back by. It might be a good idea to read through this folder carefully to see what you have to do when.
I dread to think what the support for the Project will be like. I only found out the other day that each tutor has about 250 students assigned to them. So far I have only called three or four times but always had the impression that my tutor was harrassed and under time pressure.
I have to work really hard (almost every evening and lots at weekends) to get my head round things. When you look at the PEV Workbook you find on page 77 assignments for some extra practice and on page 125 the practice examinations.
There is unfortunately not much we can do now that we have paid apart from complaining which might be counter productive.

Good luck0
