Telesales Calls

Is anyone else having problems with telesales calls at the moment?

I've had 4 within the last hour and within the last 24 hours I've had 7 from the same company. Not very helpful when I'm trying to concentrate on getting someone's accounts out.

I asked the last person where they got my details from all they would say was Experion, they tried telling me they didn't have any contact details for them and I've been unable to find their details on the internet to make a complaint.

    Hi Scotty

Thanks for that. I'm going to contact them to see what they have to say. I've now received my 8th phone call from the same company, she says she's removed my name from their list this time, she said she got my details from business listings.

I've had a lot of these and I find that if you leave your handset on the desk, with the person still on the line, they soon get fed up of waiting. Some companies use a computer to call and record when you answer and hence the best time for a 'real' person to call you. If you get this, press 6 and 7 on your handset repeatedly and your details are thrown out of the computers database at the other end, apparently.

You can also sign up for the Telephone Preference System. This allows you to say "no cold calling" and all reputable telesales companies should check their numbers against TPS first. Certainly Experian will. This doesn't stop the less reputable ones of course. You can find them at http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

BT, if you're with them, also have various call screening options so worth checking with them. I'm sure other providers also can help.

There are also a number of websites that purport to keep your phone number private. Not sure how they work but putting "telephone preference system" in google will give a sample list. An example is http://www.callpreventionregistry.co.uk/

My own technique is to leave the answer machine on but I understand not really an option for a business line!

    Good luck

    Thanks for all your advice.

I've emailed Experian and business listings and asked them to remove my name. I don't know if it's just coincedence but I haven't had any calls since.

Unfortuntely as several members of my family work for companies that withhold their number it means I can't use the telephone preference service as they would be unable to get through. I have caller display on my phone and always ignore the international calls, but I have to answer the other withheld numbers just in case.

The telephone preference service won't stop withheld numbers getting through. All it is is that companies can't ring you with cold calls if you are on the list. Since we've got on it at work we have gone from 5 a day down to none. If by chance someone does cold call you just ask who they are as you need to report them to the tps for breaking the rules and they soon hang up and don't call again!!
