Consolidated balance sheet

How would you deal with an inter company balance in a consolidated balance sheet?
the only example I can find is in my FTC texbook and I don't really understand it

Although it is never come up before in an exam I feel that after all the suprises in the June exam sitting I should be prepared for everything

If there is anybody who cold explain this to me I would be Grateful

    Inter-co balances get cancelled out upon consolidation.

    I understand that they need to be cacelled out and I can see how the treatement of them for a consolidated P&L works but I was wodering what the treatment was in the consolidated balance sheet?
