Re:SELF EMPLOYED BOOKKEEPERS NEEDED FOR SUB CONTRACT WORK

    Hi Caz

I live to far away (Lancaster) to take on any work from you but i am very interested to hear how you have managed to gain so much business that you now have a surplus.

I am looking to do some book-keeping in the evenings and have't started advertising etc yet but would be very interested to hear any tips you have.

I don't want loads of complicated clients just a couple of small ones to keep me going

    Many thanks
    Emma

Re:SELF EMPLOYED BOOKKEEPERS NEEDED FOR SUB CONTRACT WORK

I also have the same as Emma, shame I live so far away from Devon really (Essex), but how do you go about getting small clients, I always think the best way to learn and gain experience is by actually doing it in the job, unfortunatly I was made redundant at the end of September and although I've been working in accounts for 10 years it's mainly been in Purchase Ledger and Credit Control, and I now want a bookkeeping role, something that is going to cover all areas of accounts and that is going to fit in with the studies, but companies won't take the risk on me because I haven't got enough experience, so I'm kind of stuck at the mo cause companies also don't want me for soley P/L or C/C roles anymore, cause I've got too much experience and they think I will get bored, so I would love tot ry and find some small clients that I can earn a bit of cash to get me by but more important I get the experience and knowledge.

    Hi Abida

Sorry to change the subject here but i noticed you are a certified book-keeper with ICB i am also studying this qualification and wondered what your thoughts are. Having started the ICB i am wondering if IAB would have been better. I pressume you have done all three levels, who did you study with?

    Anyway sorry to change subject.

    Thanks

    Hi
I managed to complete the first level of the ICB, but I didnt go on to complete the other levels as I started my AAT.
I havent come across IAB im afraid so wouldnt be able to advise.
I think they are both very similar and hold the same valua interms of qualification.
    hope this helps

Re:SELF EMPLOYED BOOKKEEPERS NEEDED FOR SUB CONTRACT WORK

    Hiya,

A Few tips, I scanned the papers for part-time bookkeeping jobs, and then sold it to them when I went to interview that It was cheaper for them for me beig self employed (NO paye & NIC) and also that as we are qualified we are more knowledgable! You can do it sell yourself - (not too cheap either) I first got Business cards from vista printe free first if you e mail me I can send you a link you can design what you want and get 250 free.. it all helps

Re:SELF EMPLOYED BOOKKEEPERS NEEDED FOR SUB CONTRACT WORK

    Hi Caz

I am currently studying AAT Intermediate and would be interested in doing some extra Book-keeping to obtain more experience.
I currently keep the books for a local village pub (located in Northamptonshire) and prepare his end of year accounts and do the VAT returns quarterly.

If you do have some work available in the Northamptonshire area or within Midlands i am more than prepared to take this on.
    Many Thanks

    Hi Louise

Sorry for the change of subject but thought you might be interested in this one.

On the Accountingweb website, there is someone called Nicola Jones, who is always advertising for staff. She is based in Wiltshire, I can't remember where exactly but I think it was somewhere reasonable near to you. I'm from Dorset and contacted her, but I am a bit too far away from her.

    Her email address is nicola@nicolajones.co.uk.

Re:SELF EMPLOYED BOOKKEEPERS NEEDED FOR SUB CONTRACT WORK

    Hi Louise

I have just found the email I received from Nicola Jones and noticed she is in Westbury as well, so hopefully, she'll be able to offer you something. She also has a website, you might have found it already, but if not, it's www.nicolajones.co.uk.

Have you also checked the Members in Practice forum? There is someone offering a bookkeeping and payroll company for sale in Wiltshire, I contacted her hoping it might be reasonably local to me. It is in Devizes, which is a bit too far for me, I am in North Dorset, but maybe not too far for you?

    Sue

Re:SELF EMPLOYED BOOKKEEPERS NEEDED FOR SUB CONTRACT WORK

Hello Sue, thanks very much for your advice.
I did contact Nicola, she has no work just at the moment but she may have some in the summer, so Im keeping that in mind :)
I've had a look at that members in practice noticeboard and I noticed some of your messages that you have started up being self-employed.
Im really hoping that I can get to this stage one day. At the moment I am studying Intermediate, working in a large company where my position as accounts assistant is quite limited.
I hope to go onto a smaller firm like a small accountants practice and study ACCA.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Many thanks, Louise

Re:SELF EMPLOYED BOOKKEEPERS NEEDED FOR SUB CONTRACT WORK

    Hi Louise

I guess Nicola Jones may have just got through her busy time now we have gone past the personal tax deadline.

I worked for an Accountancy, bookkeeping and payroll bureau for 18 months, then when I was made redundant I decided to set up on my own.

Now that I'm on my own I have contact with Chartered Accountants. I would suggest that if you are planning to get experience before setting out on your own that you do try to get in with a company where there are qualified Accountants. Since leaving the bureau I have discovered that they are not meeting their legal requirements as accountants, so I wasnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt trained in a way that is very helpful to me now.

Keep writing to accountants, because I found that they all wanted someone with 2 years practice experience, so if you can get bookkeeping work from them it might be a good start.

You will find it very different working in a practice, I found it a major shock after working in Industry.
