Norton anti virus software

Hi

I was hoping someone could give me advice on upgrading Norton Internet Security.

My current subscription is due to run out this week, so I have bought an upgrade version from PC World, which they told me was the version I would need as I already had Norton installed.

The part I am concerned about is they told me I would need to completely uninstall the current version of Norton that was on my computer. I would have thought that to install an upgrade it needs software on the computer to upgrade.

Anyone got any ideas?

Sue

It might be wise to contact Norton help desk with details of the versions you have got on your PC and the new one. I do know that is inadvisable to keep AV software from two different software houses on the same PC because there can be conflict between the two which may cause a crash.
If you don't get any joy with the help line, but you think the PC world advice was genuine, then uninstall via the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programmes. I have unistalled Norton in order to install a differnet AV software. It's quite involved - I think there were about three programmes to remove. make sure you are not on the internet while you do all this.
    Good luck

Thanks. I looked all through the norton website, there were loads of questions and answers for different situations but none of them fitted mine. I decided to go ahead and uninstall my previous norton (as I still have it to reinstall if necessary) then install the upgrade. It seems to be working so hopefully it will be ok. It just didnt seem to make sense to me.

I used to use Norton, but I found Avast! Anti-Virus which you can download and use for free from the internet (legally of course).

It seems to use up less system resources to, and you still get regular updates on virus definitions.

    Hi Lincs

Can you post the web address for it, I use Norton but found it takes up too much space.

    Thanks in advance

    The link is http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

when you go there itll talk about registering within 60 days but if you read on youll see that it is still free.

Sorry if you already know this, but remember to uninstall youre existing anti-virus software before installing another! I here it has some nasty results otherwise.

My free trial of Norton AV expired yesterday. I tried to renew it, but the renew button didn't do anything. there were no clear instructions for downloading from the website, so I gave up and reverted to my preferred AV software - Panda. I also use Spybot Search and Destroy,(for spyware) and Adaware (for adware). They are all easy to use, and so far, I have never had a serious virus attack.

I think it's all very much personal opinion which anti virus software you chose. A lot of people don't like Norton, but I don't think that software you get free can be as good as software you pay for.

Me ex boss use to use Norton until an IT advisor told him AVG was better and free, so my boss uninstalled Norton and installed AVG. The computers never worked properly again after and within a week they all had viruses on that he couldn't get rid of, so the free software cost him a lot more in time than paying for Norton would have.

aw but Sue the virus software I said I was using above (Avast) is only free for a single user - business have to pay for exactly the same software.

That should at least be some comfort. I guess they are doing it as a marketing gimmick.

I would probably agree Norton is the best after all they have the biggest budget. Wouldnt want to sound like im trying to flog Avast!
