Hi, does anyone know if AAT students can authorise the accounts for self-employed people?

My husband who works for himself as a window-cleaner and has a local accountant to sort his accounts out. I noticed that on one of the accountant's letters the paper was embossed with AAT Logo.

So can an aat member signoff and put together accounts? Would this be Level 4 Technician only?

I'd be really grateful for a reply if someone knows!
I'm studying level 3 Intermediate and I could do with the practice.

    Hi

When it comes to signing off accounts, the person who can/has to sign them depends on who they are going to be sent to.

For Ltd company accounts for companies house have to be signed off by the board of directors, not as is commonly thought, the company accountants/auditors (they sign the audit report if needed). As for inland revenue tax returns, the only statutory return if your husband is a sole trader, you'll need to check their requirements which will be affected by the ammount of turnover. At the worst there should be nothing wrong with you completeing the return but him authorising/signing it.

Banks also like to look at full accounts from time to time, and they will have their own requiements, again probably dependent on turnover.

You could always negotiate a lower fee with your accountant and do more of the work yourself i.e. you could put the accounts together and get him to check them. That would give you some experience and some back up.
